NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Monday morning, New Hanover County Commissioners decided against supporting a resolution to end private bar memberships.

The private memberships make people wait three days before entering and establishment.

Some Marines say the membership is a way for bar owners to discriminate against who enters the business, but bar owners argue the rule keeps crowds under control.

Commissioners say they won't support the resolution until they know there is enough police patrol in downtown Wilmington.

People who want the rule change say they're still headed in the right direction.

"We're still moving forward. We have the support from the City of Wilmington, various beach towns, and downtown businesses. So we're going to move forward," said John Hinnant with Wilmington Downtown Inc..

Now, Hinnant said he's waiting to go before the Alcohol Beverage Control board.

Private bar memberships will likely make it on the ABC's agenda in the next few months.
