The Unsinkable USS NEVADA BB-36 -- New Book Tells the Heroic Exploits of a Legendary Warship and the True Story of WWII
Thursday October 16, 8:00 pm ET

RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 16, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Before, battleships were known as a potent symbol of naval dominance and national might, as well as a tool for diplomacy and military strategy. Today, they have become obsolete and now serve as museums in many American seaports. Follow the heroic exploits of the unsinkable legendary battleship USS Nevada BB-36 during its baptism of fire at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, and its valiant attempt, under vicious renewed air attacks, to reach the open sea through Battle Born, a fascinating book co-authored by LCDR L. Peter Wren, USNR (Ret) and Charles T. Sehe.

Completely modernized and refitted with the latest weaponry, the USS Nevada began its vengeance against the Japanese in the harsh environs of the Aleutian Islands. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the two-ocean battleship participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France where its gun crews, during 82 hours of constant gun support, established an efficiency record unequaled in naval history. After some interesting replacements of her main (14``) battle-worn gun barrels, the Nevada re-crossed the Pacific waters to lay down deadly barrages to support the U.S. troop landings and end Japanese dominance of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At war's end, the weary ship even defied the tremendous force of two atom bombs designed to sink anything afloat.

Most of USS Nevada's historical information in this joint venture is basically from Charles T. Sehe, who served his navy career on this ship. Co-author Wren received Sehe's many hand-penned paged memoirs and endeavored to place them in proper order. Sehe's shipmates and marines onboard the USS Nevada also added their recollections, and other sources are listed to aid in telling the whole story. Numerous oral reports and entertaining facts of naval history are also recorded throughout this book. Rarely does history report on what happened to the crews whose ships were sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack. The USS Nevada crew and officers feel their ship not only served faithfully during a war but also lent her strength and ironsides to provide a floating laboratory for better understanding of needs in a nuclear war. Battle Born is an effort to bring the USS Nevada forward for recognition.

About the Authors

LCDR L. Peter Wren, USNR (Ret) entered the U.S. Navy on 28 December 1941 and completed ``Boot Camp'' in Norfolk, Virginia in January 1942. Wren has authored several other military books, one of which was also published by Xlibris, namely We Were There -- The USS Indianapolis Tragedy. Because his writings poignantly tell the real story -- survivors and others send their stories to be retold -- so it is with the story of the USS Nevada. It is a first-hand account -- as though you sat with a sailor as he told his story. Many sailors and Marines who refused to talk, now knowing Wren and his writing skill, reveal the real story of World War II. Charles T. Sehe entered the U.S. Navy on 28 November 1940 and had completed his recruitment training at the Great Lakes Naval Center (Ill.). Sehe remained aboard the USS Nevada from its baptism of fire at Pearl Harbor to the end of hostilities at Okinawa, 15. August 1945. He retired as Professor emeritus after forty-four successful years teaching premedical, pre-dental, pre-nursing college students in the areas of Human Anatomy, Human Development, and Endocrinology at various universities.
