GREENCASTLE -- Lance Cpl. Joshua S. Cotton was recently awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Cotton of the U.S. Marine Corps is deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

While serving with a unit from Camp Lejeune, N.C., Cotton performed his duties in a "highly professional and exemplary manner." By working with Iraqi police and local leaders, he was critical to the success of two operations on April 7 and 14 that resulted in the recovery of five large weapons cache sites. His actions helped to preserve the safety of the local area and further support the Global War on Terrorism.

According to the Marine Corps, he also identified and targeted homes and individuals resulting in the detention of five individuals. While conducting site exploration, he properly photographed, documented and seized four weapons, improvised explosive device components, multiple cell phones and more than $1,800 of American currency, they said. These actions resulted in the detainment of three insurgents.

Cotton is a 2005 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg, and is the son of Steve and Denise Cotton, Greencastle.

He has been in the Marines since Sept. 11, 2006.
