400 Marines returning to Camp Lejeune Thursday

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Elements of 1st Battalion , 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, and 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion will be returning to Camp Lejeune, N. C., Oct. 16 following the completion of a successful deployment to Iraq’s Al Anbar province in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion’s approximately 900 Marines and sailors provided security and stability operations for Regimental Combat Team 1.

Approximately 400 Marines will be returning Thursday.

Marine battalions returning to NC base

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) - Marine units are returning to their North Carolina base from a deployment that included the handover of security responsibilities to the Iraqi government.

About 400 Marines are expected back at Camp Lejeune on Thursday. Some 900 in all are returning over several days.

The Marines are members of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment and the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion.

2nd Marine Division spokesman 1st Lt. Philip Klay said the Marines had a formal handover ceremony in Anbar on Sept. 1.

The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines had two troops killed in combat and six wounded.
