Marines carry school search into Iraqi desert

Four Marines from King George County haven't just been serving their country during Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq.

They've also been scoping out a possible location for the county's next high school.

The Marines had their picture taken, somewhere in the Iraqi desert, with a handmade sign that reads: "Future site of KGHS."

The men, ages 19 to 23, all graduated from King George High School between 1999 and 2002. They're reservists with the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion from Quantico Marine Corps Base.

The Marines are Adam Assur, Brian Jaquith, Will Taylor and Chris Huff.

Jaquith is a corporal; the others are lance corporals.

The 4th LAR was deployed to the Middle East in March. The unit is known as the "Iron Horse Marines" and is trained to scout out locations, provide other troops with information and fight off enemy attacks.

Like every student who went through the school in the past 15 years, the Marines probably were promised a new school before they graduated, said Robert Weaver, a King George resident and part-time teacher at the school.

A friend forwarded him the picture of the sandy school site, and he passed it along to The Free Lance-Star and members of the School Board.

Board members haven't just discussed school construction; they've invested half a million dollars in design studies. The board had hoped to build a new elementary school for 2004 and a new high school the next year, but found out in February they can't afford both without substantial tax hikes.

At least four King George High School graduates know where the county can buy some desert land, really cheap.
