View Full Version : Good book?
I wanted to read more on Lieutenant General Puller, and wanted to find out whats a good book to look at reading?
I found one called:
Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USMC by Jon T. Hoffman (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?ATH=Jon+T%2E+Hoffman)
This was published back in 2002, and didn't want to buy it if someone else, or a concensus of others had a more recommended book.
Also, I'd like to find a recommended book in regards to the Marine Corps and would like a concensus of you all on what you read that was a very good read.
Thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend Poolees pick up Starship Troopers. Yes it is the book that the movie is based off of, but it really has little to do with the book. It gives tremendous insight on basic training and some of the things you will go through. It also gives you a taste of what it's like to be in the operational forces and some of the things you will encounter.
Wish I had read it before i shipped instead of after.

No offense LCpl but it is called Boot not Basic.....
On the side note i have looked at Starship Troopers it looks good but I sadly didn't have the money on me to buy it... going to have to go get it sooner or later.

Making the Corps by Thomas E. Ricks, goes into the history of the Corps, where the traditions and whatnot come from, plus it follows recruits that are in boot camp so you learn what they go through. I recommend it.

I'm almost finished reading Making the Corps. Great reading, especially the section about Al Gray and James Webb.

Even though it is fiction, Starship Troopers is a great book. If you've seen the movie... Forget about it. The book is completely different. If anything, the movie is a parody of the book.

You are correct; however, it is NOT your place to tell him seeing as to how YOU'RE NOT A MARINE!

Yes, there is.......................a WOMAN MARINE that knows how to use HER weapon.

I recommend "Miracle At Belleau Wood". I am almost done reading it and its a thrill to read about one of the greatest battles in the Marine Corps history. Its like you're there.

I always heard the only thing sexier than a Marine in Dress blues, was a Marine out of Dress Blues.

Making of the Corps followed a company through PI at the same time was in San Diego. Things have changed since the book was written (such as the crucible, it didn't exist then) but it still paints a decent picture.
The book I read before boot camp that I thought helped the most was called Boot. Things had changed around between it being written and me getting to MCRD, but it still painted a pretty good broad picture.
Starship Troopers had a huge influence on former Commandant General Krulak. I do at times believe he watched the movie and lost some of the message, but parts of his ideas could be traced directly to the book. I highly recommend that ALL Marines read the book. If you get it read before you enlist, it is just that much better.

Its whatever the f*ck he wants to call it; he earned it. You want to lock on poolees, then get on with yourself. If he wants to call it the "Dum Dum Factory" he can. Hell, you'd probably be more successful there... Guess y'all already covered this one...

One of the funniest things I've read on these forums! Definitely rivals the kid asking if he should practice opening MRE's!

Wait a second... something isn't right here. According to your profile you are male. And according to your signature you think male Marines are sexy... you know there is a policy about this type of thing right?

Can I please ask that this thread go back on topic about good books and that all the other discussion go to pm or another thread dedicated to it?
I have put an order in for Making the Corps and should receive it this week. After reading this one, I'll probably get the one about Chesty I originally posted, and then on to another that is highly recommended here.

"One Bullet Away" by Nathaniel Fick. Very good read.
I agree, sir. I enjoyed that book as well. Generation Kill is one of my favorite books so I was happy to read more about Maj Fick.
There was a book a few years ago, haven't seen it anywhere lately, Keeping Faith? It told the story of a kid going through boot camp from two perspectives, one from the recruit at Parris Island, and the other from his father's. I liked that one as well.
Corporal, if you have seen Generation Kill (the mini series on HBO), can you tell me if the book is closely compared to it or better in certain aspects? I enjoyed watching the mini-series, and still have all the episodes on my DVR box.

I watched like the first two episodes then my digital cable got cut off lol.
It was a bit different at times. They have to make it more "entertaining" for tv, I suppose. Like that whole throwing racial slurs at each other on the first episode, that sh*t never happened in the book.
Read the book anyways, it's a good book.

Band of Sisters - American Women at War in Iraq by Kirsten Holmstedt (Kirsten wrote about women in different branches but there are a couple of bada$$ WM's in it)

I also agree, Making the Corps is an excellent book. Here's a few others I've enjoyed...
The March Up: Taking Baghdad with the United States Marines by Bing West
The Proud Bastards by E. Michael Helms
Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq by Thomas Ricks ( no flaming please )
USMC: A complete history by Jon Hoffman ( haven't quite finished this monster )
Why Marines Fight by James Brady
A couple non-military related books...
The Kite Runner by Khlaed Hosseini
The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life by Jim Tressel
I'm sure I'm missing some of my collection but I'm @ work and can't remember them all.
Marine! The life of Chesty Puller is a great book. I think it's on the Commandant's Reading List, too.
Received my copy of Making the Corps and plan to start reading it today or tomorrow. Browsing through it and seeing the quotes on the back, it looks like a really good read, and with the recommendations of others on here, I'm sure to find it a great read.

How in the world is that "fortunate". Maybe I'm missing the point being as I never read it, but just by the title then the discription applied...
Anyway on a side note: Raider is a good book to read. Its about motivation behind the lines in a POW camp, and the rescuers determination in WWII and Vietnam.

Aye sir, understood.
So I'm two chapters into 'Making the Corps' and I have to admit, I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation for this book.
I just also ordered One Bullet Away as it was ranked well on Barnes and Nobles, as well as here from your suggestions. I also ordered Generation Kill from your suggestions and ranking on Barnes and Nobles. I actually am getting the hardcover version of Generation Kill for about $5.38, brand new. It's considered a bargain book which means its brand new, but may have markings or stickers on it saying something like "publishers' overstock".

I highly recommend "Hard Corps: From Gangster to Marine Hero" by Marco Martinez. In his teenage years, Martinez was a thug. He admits that he was a waste of perfectly good oxygen that someone who was doing good in the world could have used. He even begins the prologue by saying, "For the first seventeen years of my life, I was a sh*thead." The Marine Corps took him away from all of this and produced an honorable 0311. During the invasion of Iraq, he earned the Navy Cross by launching a captured enemy RPG into an enemy building and then single-handedly assaulting it and killing four enemy soldiers with a grenade and his rifle. This action silenced the enemy so that a wounded Marine, Corporal Paul Gardner, could be evacuated. Corporal Gardner wrote a review of this book that can be found on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Corps-Gangster-Marine-Hero/dp/0307383059/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224869621&sr=8-1). Sergeant Martinez is not only hero, he is also a master of the English language. He knows how to write a captivating story. This book is pure motivation.

My first platoon Sergeant had us read "Guns Up" before deploying to Iraq. Great book that details the importance of brotherhood.

If you like good reading material, and you're into a little military history, pick up 1776 by David McCullough. Don't believe you'll be sorry.
