John Mayer may sing “Your Body is a Wonderland,” but on a recent trip to Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Marine Corps Air Station New River, he found out firsthand that things aren’t always so sweet.

The soulful crooner made an appearance Aug. 26 at the Marine bases, visiting patients at Lejeune’s Wounded Warrior Battalion-East before firing off a few rounds in an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer and standing in for some Marine Corps Martial Arts Program training.

“Believe me when I say that the day was life-changing,” Mayer said.

Mayer, who has been linked romantically in the past with actresses Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Mischa Barton, came to the bases with David Kahn, a chief instructor for the Israeli Krav Maga Association, a New York City organization teaching the principles of the hand-to-hand combat system used by the Israeli military.

Mayer, a Krav Maga student, was adamant that the visit not be publicized beforehand, Marine officials said. He said the day was “not about us, but about the Marines.”

A Marine spokeswoman said Mayer handed out about 100 tickets to his concert the following night in Raleigh, and wore a Wounded Warrior Battalion T-shirt on-stage that read “Chicks dig scars.”

Mayer and Marines may seem like an odd match, but he does have several things in common with some Marines. The singer speaks Japanese and loves tattoos, even getting a full sleeve tattoo earlier this year.
