Effort provides Marines with gifts

Local businesses and individuals are asked to contribute to "Operation Santa," to send Christmas stockings, games, CDs and DVD to about 600 Marines serving in Iraq. Many do not receive any other mail or packages.

Each Marine will receive a Christmas stocking filled with goodies, such as candy canes, hard candy, gum, hot cocoa, beef jerky, peanuts and other personal items.

Another box, shared by each platoon, is filled with games, DVDs, CDs, Christmas music, Christmas decorations and a decorated Christmas tree.

Funds also are needed to pay for shipping, which last year cost about $1,000.

A donation can be monetary by check, cash or gift cards to any retailer where the above items can be purchased. A tax exempt receipt will be sent to anyone making a monetary donation.

Deadline for collection of items is Oct. 25.

For details, call Mary Lou Webb at 860-8997 or send e-mail to marylou@ papermywalls.com

Items also can be dropped off at Webb's Blinds & Wallpaper, 2640 S. Glenstone.
