View Full Version : How to graduate 1st in bootcamp?

Ratcliff

First of all, I'm very interested in becoming a Scout/ Sniper. I want to excel and be the best in bootcamp to imrpove my chances in getting into Scout/ Sniper school. I read in the Scout/ Sniper sticky that 0341 was best to make it into Scout/ Sniper because of the math and training you do. Is it?

Uh, what can I do to better prepare myself to become the best in bootcamp? Besides PT.

Let's see, what do I think of when I think of a Scout/Sniper?

Oh yeah, I think of someone that observes their surroundings and is willing to go the extra mile to accomplish their mission.

Since your mission in this case is to find an answer to questions that have been asked no less than 900 billion times on this forum, I'd assume that an aspiring sniper would be able to observe this forum and find the answer.

There's this top-class military simulation (with Marines, no less!) called Call of Duty 4 that gives excellent insight into becoming a USMC Scout/Sniper. Most of the skills in that game are directly transferable and as real as it gets in the field. Make sure you play in "hardcore" mode so other people you know you're the best of the best.

That's debatable.
It doesn't really make a difference as long are you are in the 03 field.

You still have almost 9 months to pick up extracurricular activities. Do something that demonstrates Leadership in your Community. It will build confidence and get you noticed. Pick something that you can get your Heart into.

And read all the Poolee Knowledge you can find here. We've been around for years answering hundreds of Poolee questions.

lol nice. I think he realized you were kidding... I think...

But if anything just know your knowledge. You will learn it there but it'll ease the burden from what I hear. Worry about getting through and helping out your fellow recruits. You'll be an honor graduate if they feel you should.

Lord knows there's a lot of differences between the Marine Corps and the Army.........But, every sniper I met in the Army was quiet. They were the guys that half the 11B's took for admin pukes until someone cared enough to notice the tab. No bragging, no cocky stories about how 'bad-ass' they are. On top of that, I don't think I met a single one that shot 40/40 on qual.

Here's two guides we go by as Marines, Marine Corps Leadership Traits (http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/usmc/leadership_traits.htm), and Leadership Principles (http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/usmc/leadership.htm).

Yes, it is much easier to be a Sniper in the Army. They don't have any standards at all- if you can kill people on an X-Box you're good to go, even if you have no clue what the job actually entails.

Give their recruiter a call- just forget you ever heard the word Marine.

easier than in the Marine Corps? If I had to guess, I would say it probably is.
Army is capitalized, just Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force should be.

Is it easy to become a US Army Sniper? No. I recall hearing that the final judged stalk has the single highest fail rate of any event in the Army, to include ORS. The standards for entry aren't rough, but there aren't a ton of slots open so the more competitive you are the better. 210 APFT with no less than 70 per event on the 18-21 chart, normal color vision (which you need anyway for the required 11,18 or 19 series MOS) and an expert qualification within 6 months of reporting along with the obligatory psych eval.

Not nearly as impressive or experienced as yours. It consists of a very rocky 4 years with the Army Guard after which I made a complete ass of myself in college by spending the majority of the time so drunk I could barely stand. I got kind of lost in life and F'd off for a while and now I've seen the light and decided to go back in service. Army or Marines, well if my fatass doesn't lose this last couple % BF the choice will be made for me. One way or another I WILL be back in uniform at the beginning of 2009.
Not trying to ruffle any feathers just bestowing knowledge I gained second-hand from a lot of friends that had their **** together while I was being stupid.

Call of Duty 4 won't get you to be a sniper buddy. You can tell your DI all that prestige mode crap but being a sniper isn't a single man out in the wilderness taking out one person after another. You do intelligence gathering mostly and you only take one shot. You miss you die.

So true PFC. I don't even bother helping these "scout sniper, recon" types out.

Going from a high schooler or a college dropout to a steely eyed elite Marine Corps Scout Sniper right after a 3 month period of boot camp is like giving the honor grad blood stripes. They're just not ready.

The first step is becoming a Marine, and many scout sniper/video game boys have no idea what they're getting into.

Man this thread got kind of off topic haha.
In bootcamp, they were showing us the M-249 and the M203 and the first thing the blackshirt instructor said when he pulled it out was, "so who here has played call of duty?"
Well ratcliff, if you want to finish 1st in boot, shoot expert on the rifle range (and it should be a high expert score), get something around a 300 PFT, and be an overall noticable and hardworking recruit. The DI's will notice if you really put out. As for being a scout sniper, theres a lot of time until you need to think about that, and you might even change your mind about that after boot camp.

I'd love to do some of the things they want to do such as go to Scout Sniper school, but I also realize that I need to make it through Boot Camp, and shoot Expert etc... A lot of things to consider, like am I willing to die for my country or am I wiling to be in a wheelchair. When I was deciding on Infantry, these were some of the things I thought about, and became "okay" with. I doubt most younger DEPers think about these things.

to be the best.. you better be good at leading other recruits while you have an angry DI screaming at you. it would also be a good idea to have the best PFT in the platoon, because it seemed to me the DI picked the most physically fit guys to be squad leaders / guide. If you arent good at screaming at other recruits and telling them what to do, you probably wont be the best

PS. Dont go overboard. One guy tried to be guide but failed miserably because he was a complete youknowwhat. He got blanket partied a few times. be careful

You want noticed in bootcamp? TRY to earn your time on the quarterdeck, and in the sandpit. Make sure you are good at leading the other recruits, but if there's someone on the quarterdeck or in the pit, your ass better be there with him. Also you had better be sporting a 300pft going into bootcamp, and make sure on free time you are making all the fatbodies and nasties work on pulls and crunches. It ****ed me off so much watching a recruit who could only do 3 pulls sit on his footlocker and right letters home because it was "his time". Pick those people out quick and tell them they have 8 hours of free time in the dark to write letters every friggin night.
