Engine snag hits US plane

MANAMA

A SECOND US military aircraft in a month has made an emergency landing at Bahrain International Airport, it has emerged. The C130 military transport plane, operated by US Marines, reportedly developed engine failure and had to abort take-off, said sources.

There were six military personnel and cargo onboard the aircraft on Friday when the pilot was forced into an emergency descent at around 1.20pm.

Airport disaster teams were placed on high alert during the incident and Civil Defence teams were dispatched to the scene.

"The plane later landed without any injuries to anyone on board," sources added.

A Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) spokesman yesterday confirmed the incident, but dismissed it as "routine".

Authorities at the US Navy headquarters in Bahrain were unavailable for comment.

It is the second C130 transport plane to experience difficulties in Bahrain in a month.

On September 8, another aircraft that had just taken off from Bahrain developed a fuel leak and had to return.

That plane also landed safely and airport traffic was unaffected.
