Searched, couldn't find anything. I was wondering when I should get a cell phone. After boot, after I hit the fleet? Also should I keep the area code I have in my hometown or use the one I'll get wherever my duty station is? Thank you.

Wait until you get to your duty station.

What about the area code thing? Should I use the area code in which i currently live in because all of my old friends and family have that area code or just use the one where my duty station is at?

It's up to you. <br />
With your old area code people calling you won't be charged long distance, but it depends on the company you go with, which can't be decided upon until you get to your duty station.

Wait until you get to your first duty station. You might get stationed somewhere the cell phone you buy wont work and then you will be SOL.

Yeah, you may get sent to Oki and that's pretty pointless to have a cell phone since they dont work over there.

Why the hell are you worried about a cell phone?

My advice would be not to get one until after you are at your first command.....unless you are willing to carry your whole Verizon network with you everywhere you go.

Because with some plans you will have dead zones.

Can you hear me now?

I'd never get a Sprint phone. They're the only company I've ever had that I couldn't get a signal from my house, and they didn't care at all.

But, the comment about everyone having a cell phone is correct for the most part. Since you don't pay long distance it isn't much of an issue. Of course, some pizza delivery guys won't show up when you give them an area code that doesn't match the local number.

That never happened to me at the barracks.
