Local Purple Heart veterans hosting Nov. 1 golf tournament to aid ‘wounded warriors’
Thursday, 02 October 2008

For the third straight year, soldiers and Marines recuperating from serious wounds suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan will be going home for the holidays courtesy of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH).

Last year, the 11 MOPH chapters in North Carolina combined to provide roundtrip travel for more than 100 wounded military personnel during the holidays. Additionally, travel assistance is given when needed for emergency leave.

Once again, local MOPH Chapter 844 will play a big part in funding travel for Marines recuperating at the Wounded Warrior Barracks at Camp Lejeune, N.C. and soldiers recovering at the Warrior Transition Barracks at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

To help subsidize this program, Chapter 844, headquartered in Waynesville, will be holding the first annual Wounded Warriors Golf Tourney at Lake Junaluska Golf Course on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The Captain’s Choice scramble event will be comprised of teams of four players and will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

The donation for each player is $50 and will include greens fees, electric cart, beverages, awards for the top three teams, numerous door prizes and a barbecue buffet immediately following the tournament. Additionally, prizes on long drive and closest-to-the-pin holes will be awarded.

Some of the awards and door prizes include golf packages at local courses, dinners at area restaurants, sporting equipment, gift certificates and much more.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart is a nationally chartered organization comprised solely of combatwounded veterans. WNC Chapter 844 has members within its ranks representing WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Beirut and Iraq.

In addition to helping fund the Wounded Warrior and Warrior Transition programs, the tournament will benefit other Purple Heart programs in the local community. Chapter 844 promotes patriotism by supplying and replacing American flags in local schools and sponsoring the Purple Heart Leadership Award at eight area high school JROTC programs.

The chapter is also involved in supporting local scouting programs and provides assistance to area veterans and those at the VA hospital in Asheville.

Teams and individuals wishing to register for the Wounded Warriors Golf Tourney phone Ken Keidel at (828)926-7737 after 11 a.m. or sign-up at the Lake Junaluska pro shop.

Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring a hole ($50), contributing door prizes or making a donation to this worthwhile project may call (828)926-7737.
