MCAGCC — The Department of Defense will conduct a competition at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center until Saturday, Oct. 4 that, if successful, will award $1 million to the team that comes up with the next generation, long-endurance power system for Marines and soldiers.

The director, Defense Research and Engineering is sponsoring the 2008 Wearable Power Prize at the Combat Center. The contest seeks to reduce the weight of power systems that troops carry and aims to award a total prize purse of $1.75 million to the lightest-weight systems that provide 20 watts of electrical power for 96 hours, but weigh less than 4 kilograms, or 8.8 pounds.

“Based on their plans and system descriptions, we will see a wide variety of technologies in this competition,” said John Hopkins, the Wearable Power Prize program co-manager from the U. S. Army Research Laboratory.

“Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines carry too much battery weight to power their equipment, and this prize seeks to reduce that weight,” said Hopkins. “This competition will be the first time any organization has simultaneously tested such a large number of prototype warfighter power systems under the most challenging conditions.”

From an original roster of 169 teams, 51 teams survived various stages of qualification to compete.

Teams representing 30 U.S. States and 15 countries began the competition on Sunday, Sept. 28 with a 92-hour bench load test. The power systems will be subjected to electrical demands similar to those seen in service today and expected in the future. Power systems surviving the bench test will enter the final stage of competition on Oct. 4. The “Power Wear Off” is open to the public.

In addition, Friday, Oct. 3 is an open-gate public Kids’ Day at MCAGCC. All local-area schools are invited to bring students to this public science competition. There will be many interactive attractions.

Take a sneak peek at the future of high-tech Soldier power and get an insider's look at exhibits and displays of the latest DoD technology.

On Oct. 3 and 4 attendees will see interactive demonstrations of cool, high-tech robotic equipment, and there will be free give-aways for students. Meet leading government scientists, engineers and inventors from laboratories and corporations all over the world.
