Thrift

Norfolk, VA — Do you know where you can get Navy and Marine Corps dress and service blouses and trousers for as little as $3?

How about a wide variety of female clothing from jeans to dresses, shirts, belts, shoes and more for the same low prices?

Well, I’ll tell you -- the Marine Officers’ Wives’ Thrift Shoppe.

Located right behind the car wash near the Camp Allen exchange, they also have household goods like printers, radios, pots, pans, televisions and lots of other knick-knacks.

“Basically the only thing we don’t have is underwear,” said Terry Kokko, manager of the thrift shop since 2002.

The thrift shop does more than just move secondhand goods; it has been providing services to military and civilian alike for more than 30 years and funneling all the profits to charity and in the form of scholarships to active duty, retired and dependents and spouses of deceased Marines.

“Last year we gave away eight $1,000 scholarships, and contributed $1,000 to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the Armed Forces YMCA respectively,” said Kokko.

A committee of Marine Officers Spouses club members reviews all applications and awards the scholarships based on outstanding achievement. Applications for the scholarships are available at the shop.

Currently the shop is only open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has only seven volunteers. Kokko said with more volunteers the shop could expand its hours of operations.

“If the shop was open seven days a week,” she said, “we could as much as quadruple the amount of money we give away in scholarship and charitable donations.

Looking for a bargain? Have items to donate? Want to apply for a scholarship? You can accomplish all this and more with a quick visit to the thrift shop. Marine officer spouses who would like to volunteer their time and help the thrift shop reach its goal of increased scholarship outputs are also encouraged to apply.
