ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Marine stationed at the Albany Logistics Base was killed Friday morning in what Police call a hit and run.
Investigators say 24-year-old Sgt. Chadwick House was walking in Sylvester Road in East Dougherty County about 5:30 Friday morning.
He was struck by a semi-truck. Police now ask for your help to find that truck.
Police call this hit and run death a tragic accident. They're also still looking for the truck that hit him, and say the driver may not realize what happened.
Dougherty County Police officers were back after sun rise looking for evidence at the accident site on Sylvester Road, just west of Ramsey Road, where the Sgt. House was struck and killed. They even used their K-9 unit to look for evidence.
Two cars driving by at 5:30 this morning spotted the body, and called Police. They stayed there until first responders arrived. He was already dead. He was not wearing a Marine uniform, but had Identification. Forensics showed he had been run over by double tandem wheels.
Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek said "It was a semi-tractor trailer truck type vehicle. We have absolutely no witnesses at all. There was no debris, that we normally find with a small vehicle type accident."
Investigators learned the dead Marine had only been stationed at MCLB since July. At first they were puzzled why he would be walking on a dark highway at that time, but today Police found the people he had been with last night.
Cheek said "We know where he had been not long before that. And it appears he left there on foot. No indication of anything in the way of foul play or anything of that nature."
Now Police are asking any truck drivers who were on Sylvester Road about 5:30 this morning to call them. Police say in that dark stretch of road, with a 55 mile an hour speed limit, the driver may not know that someone was killed.
Cheek said "With this type accident, there is a possibility that a truck of that type could strike somebody without realizing it."
Officials at MCLB Albany were informed of the Marines death early Friday morning. House's body has been sent to the Atlanta GBI crime lab for autopsy.
Dougherty County Police want any truckers who were on Sylvester Road to call them at 229-430-6600.
