Seneca, an Irish pop band with bittersweet vocals and penetrating lyrics, join a host of similarly intelligent bands, performing Saturday night at the Red Marines Art and Music Festival in La Honda this weekend. The three-day festival raises money for medical treatment for veterans.

The Limerick band is touring behind its debut release "Sweeter Than Bourbon," an enjoyable CD of pleasing vocals, hummable melodies and lyrics you can wrap your brain around. But it isn't all sweetness and light. Several songs capture an edgier sound that calls up a San Francisco psychedelic vibe, including "Sentimental Freak."

But mostly the band is listenable without the sappy lyrics than many times accompanies melodic endeavors. It's a fun ride into new territory.

And Seneca is only one of a host of musical acts at the festival, often with a Russian theme. Included in the bill are Eric McFadden Trio, Russian Solution and Modorass from San Francisco, Chevrona and Mirumir from Portland, Russian musical legend Alexander Liapin, a host of electronic music and live solo players and more bands you've never heard of.

The festival was inspired by the safe return of twin brothers Mark and Valetin Tarasov from the Iraq war. Originally envisioned as a camping trip to heal and celebrate a safe return, over four years, the event grew into a festival to celebrate life, compassion and creativity. The twins, along with brother Eugene, also form the band Mobius, which will perform as part of the musical show.

Music is only one part of the Red Marines Festival. Camping, showers, a pool and food vendors are available at OVY Camp. A photography exhibit, fire dancers and 3-D visual projection will also amp up the creative factor.

A portion of proceeds benefits the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
