I just have to ask this question because out of all the Marines I have asked, its a good 95% say at some point yes, and I mean some of them are hard a$$ Marines so if you Marines could put some in put or if i could get a poll going that would be great I just really want to see how many people do cry at boot. By the way when I mean crying even if its a few tears.... You cried

It never happened to me but i'm sure it happens. I never saw it happen not unless a recruit did it after lights out. You definitely don't want to get caught crying in front of D.I's. They would see this as a sign of weakness and be all over you. There's nothing wrong with a man crying just don't do it in boot camp.

The only time I cried in boot camp was the day my Senior handed me my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, shook my hand, and said "congratulations, Private Lawler." (Yeah, that's right, I started from the VERY bottom). There was one pretty big dude in my platoon that admitted he cried the first night. Looking back, that first night wasn't sh*t. It was the 91 other nights that sucked.

We had a guy cry after his first trip to the pit. The DI wiped the tear from his eye and then ate it. And said your soul is mine *****

I think your figure of 95% may be a little high... I cried at boot camp, just once. After winning initial drill we were allowed a phone call home. Of course, I called my Mom. I became upset not because it was the first time I had talked to her in over a month, but because when I called and said "Hi Mom" she replied "Who is this?!". Screaming repeatedly at the top of your lungs will do funny things to your voice.

I cried. I was home sick like a muthafukka. Sh!t, I cried in the DI hut. No sh!t. My ego isn't that big that I can't admit it.

The DI didn't say a word. He actually, yes, actually talked to me. He was a door gunner and so was my uncle. He told me that he thought my uncle was a hard ass for being a door gunner in Viet Nam and surviving. I was spoiled when I was growing up and I had joined the Corps because I wanted to do something for myself. I never cried after that day. The next time I cried was when my dad passed away while I was gone.

There are some pictures from Life magazine, I think from the early 1970's, showing a recruit crying while the DI's just swarmed him.

Only time I seen or heard somebody cry was two guys from pain when the DI's made us do push-ups forever.

Never cried in Boot Camp, but I do get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every time I hear the Marine Corps Hymn played, and also some tears when the National Anthem is played.

We had a very devout Catholic that ocassionally cried over his Rosary and prayers at night. Not for himself but for everyone in the Platoon to get through Training. That actually comforted me and motivated me.

I admit, I cried like a baby. Especially during the Crucible... But that may have been because of my hip... haha I'd say most people in my platoon cried at one point or another, but fourth battalion tends to be a little more emotional :D

I never saw any crying in boot camp and we didn't have the Eagle Globe and Anchor ceremony that happens now but I do remember getting a little sweaty eyeball both with being called a Marine the first time and then also the retiring of our platoon guideon kind of got me too but that was about it.

I cried the first couple of nights during devotions because it was pretty much the only down time we had. I cried when we lost initial drill and final drill. I cried on the last 3/4 of a mile on the hike back from the Crucible because I thought my legs were going to give out. I cried when my drill instructor handed me my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and called me a Marine for the first time. And I cried on Family Day and on graduation when they retired my platoons guidon.

I think this question should have been worded diffrently, it should have asked why did you cry.
I didnt cry during bootcamp i did have tears of rage i wanted to kill my drill instructor for the stuff he did to us one day. He went beyond his boundraies and it was demorilizing to any human being.
We got into it it was like David and Goliath except i had a scrub brush not a rock.

During mess week I threatened another platoons' house mouse with a blanket party. He was taking freaking notes. I was ordered to the quarterdeck in an empty squadbay. Unknown DI .. so you wanna give my housemouse a blanket party. Denial all the way. Begin........... hour later so you want to give my house mouse a blanket party? Sir no sir. Go clean yourself up in the head and report back. I was in the head thinking thank God it's over, running cold water on my face. I reported back and he said begin. Hour later I was marching myself back to the chow hall. He never saw it but I did shed a tear along the way.

Not quite, this is making it seem almost higher, my question never was just stated to did you cry because of your DI's it involved crying in all that means the EGA ceramony. Thanks to all who have replyed it has answered my question to the fullest.

The only time I cried was when I got my four wisdom teeth pulled out. I walked back from dental to 1st batallion with cotton balls shoved in my mouth to stop the bleeding.Got back and everyone else was out doing drill and I had a chit to be on bedrest for 2 days when the DI showed up he said recruit what the hell you doing in the rack I couldent talk so I handed him my chit he said well your bedrest is over now and tore up the paper and told me to get out on the parade deck with everone else and practice drill and I was in so much pain cause my head was throbbing with a massive headache trying to do drill it sucked but hey I grabbed a freaking straw and sucked it the **ck up with a few tears of course.

I'll admit it. I cried during receiving because I was freaking out over the IST, especially since I shipped only being able to do a single pull up. I got lucky, did two, and graduated on time, which brings me to the other time I cried. When my Senior Drill Instructor handed me the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and called me "Marine."

Parris Island Sept 1965,most of our platoon was only one step away from prison.A mean surly group, but we were too scared and too tired for crying.Losing a Marine in Vietnam was a different matter.I still get goose-bumps hearing the Marine Corps hymn played.

Since I'm "motarded" according to my Marine buddies, I read a lot of Marine topic books (only books I can actually read and finish).

And, contrary to what most of the Marines are saying here, the book I'm currently reading, "Making the Corps," everyone cries at least once at boot camp, whether they admit it or not. All the stories of crying recruits came for different reasons, but just like usmchauer, the Platoon Guide didn't cry until he called his mom and got the "Who's this?" response. I'm sure theres some hard a**es that make it the entire time without a tear though.

I won't doubt that I'll probably end up crying once or twice on Parris Island, whether its emotions catching up with me, or the pain.

I only cried once, during the crucible, we were getting slaughtered and I mean utterly slaughtered by my kill hat, just my stick of like 12 recruits. I was back crawling and my eyes swelled up thinkign about how I'd came this far and probably wouldn't make it.

I swear to this day I still dont even remember how it ended. I must have blocked that memory out.

Ah, thank you for refreshing my memory, Gunny: I, too, cried at the gas chamber.

And, then again when I left the Island.:p

I'd like to say I shed more tears, but most of the time I sweated them all out.....:scared:

I never cried at boot camp because I have been through enough sh*t in my life that I grew a callous to all of that, even though when I injured my knee I had three DIs in my face, screaming so hard they were spitting on me. I saw tons of other girls lose it, whether it was in front of the DIs (BAD idea), or alone in the head or in their rack. Girls obviously lose it more than the guys do. I have seen firsthand guys and girls alike p*ss themselves from being so scared of the DIs. You just have to deal with it and take things one at a time. You're not going to die. The recruits before you dealt with the same and made it out alive, so chill out. Just my two cents.

I think everyone cried in the Gas Chamber in boot, you were lucky if you got a gas mask that actually worked lol....But I remember black friday, I could already tell this recruit was going to pop just in receiving platoon time.....Black Friday this guy the first time to the quarter deck started to cry and stopped and said, "he quit!" This guy stole a butter knife from the chow hall and during fire house one of the recruits found him in the corner, no lie, this guy straight stabbed himself in the wrist.....half the knife was on one side of his wrist and the other half of the knife was on the other side.....

We were waken up in the middle of the night to sit facing the port holes with our heads touching our dicks lol so we couldnt see anything....but yea a few days later i guess the DIs wanted to say hey this is what happens when your a dumbass...kid showed back up after surgery in hand cuffs and his dad came to pick him up...His dad was a Vietnam Vet in full dress blues and straight open hand ***** slapped his son...I dont know....crazy boot camp story cause it was the FIRST DAY!!!!!!! I was thinkin holy crap, what the hell did I get myself into lol.....

but something tells me that kid had alot to live up to......but my advice to all the poolees is the fact at night when your watching the planes come in and take off at MCRDSD and you want to bail....Think about if you quit how your rents would look at you! lol.....That should get the motivation BOOTS! haha jk Semper Fi!!!!

And to back up what lickdem89 said about crying when he got his EGA....I held it in too til I saw my dad crying, but it was the proudest day of my life when I could finally say that I was a United States Marine!

There was once a recruit in 1967 who climbed the fence and ran to a passenger jet, climbed into the wheel well and strapped himself in with his belt. Needles to say when the plane landed at its destination, he had froze to death.

There is always someone who thinks they can beat the system.
