Well if you read my last post than you would know my dad doesn't support me going infantry. Well i got an email from him today and he said if I dont switch back to Recon than he will call the Marines and get my contract voided and if he gets a headache from them than he will call the senator. Well I am not switching my contract. Can he really get it voided? I turn 18 October 17th and I will just swear in again. He is really making me mad. I AM GOING INFANTRY and he thinks it is a horrible decision.
Thanks Marines
There is nothing he can do. All those phone calls will do is make him look foolish. Give your recruiter a heads up on what he is threatening so the know it's not your doing. They will appreciate when some calls them asking WTF!.
If he already signed for you and the paper work is done, that's it.
Stick to your guns, this is your life not his. Use the Marine Corps Leadership Traits you have been studying, (Tact, Bearing, Courage, etc)
As for getting your contract voided, if you are under 18 and not emancipated, then he probably can do it, unless he already signed for you (As jrhd says). After you turn 18 all bets are off. There will probably be some heartburn between you two for a bit, but he will see the light.

He already signed for it. I am going to Infantry and he is ****ed that I am no longer on the Recon contract. It is real rediculous. I will still sign again if he somehow voids it. But he already signed for me and I am supposed to be leaving January 4th.
Honestly, I would just sign the recon contract, and not do the indoc at ITB.
Problem solved.
Yeah, but then you have to deal with the flack from not doing the indoc. Better to have a p!$$ed off parent who will eventually come around than having to deal with everyday needling from fellow Marines.

I take the Indoct in boot camp and if a fail it or don't take it than they stick me where they want me. I want to be Infantry, they could make me a coultinary specialist. lol.
Coultinary?!
Whoa! That's a new one! Just playing. But seriously, watch your punctuation, spelling and grammar on here. You can and will be called to task for it.

All you have to do is talk to your recruiter to make your dad happy is put you in for recon and then right before you go to boot camp you can switch right over to infantry.

Tell your pops he's lived his life and you're a grown man. I remember when i was 17 my folks wouldn't sign for me. I had to wait until i was 18 which was only a couple months away at the time. The moral of the story is that i stuck to my guns, and no one was going to persuade me away from my decision.

Okay, the way I see it you want infantry. Well Why don;t you just try for Recon to make your father happy and if you don't make it you get Infantry anyways, and at least you can say you tried. If you do make it well then kudos to you, because if you wanted some infantry work Recon will do it for you. Just my opinion.

What if he washes out of indoc and becomes a paper pusher? He lost his chance at becoming an 0311.
Stick to your guns. If you don't want to do Recon, don't. Stand up to your dad and direct your own life. He will respect your integrity more if you just tell him how it is as opposed to you going on a Recon contract to make him happy then backing out once you ship. Keep your integrity.

I thought if you don't make it to Recon they put you into another 03xx job.
Calahan- Some day your dad will be sorry about all this. Perhaps he's trying to live out his own dream through you and have you do something he couldn't. I don't know. But you need to do what you want to do, and follow your own dream. You've already chosen to be Marine, and you've chosen to go into Infantry. Those two things stacked up on top of each other makes it one of the hardest things (and one of the most rewarding things) you could do in your life.
If you feel at some later point that you want to try for Recon, than good for you. But from what I've seen any Marine would tell you to go in as another MOS first, then later try for recon after you've got through Boot Camp and earned the Title.
I really am sad to hear that your dad is acting like this. Honestly, it sounds a bit immature to me. But you need to follow your own dream, not his.

Naguyen:
Needs of the Corps, young Poolee, needs of the Corps.
If he signs a contract for Recon, and can't fulfill his end of it then the Corps can do with him as they please. As has been stated, the last thing you want to happen is to want to go Infantry but end up a box kicker or cook. You will hate your job, be an all-around $h!t-bird Marine and bring down the collective moto of those around you.
I thought if you don't make it to Recon they put you into another 03xx job.
Policy changes in the Corp with little warning. Remember this Semper Gumby, always flexible. You never know when the change will occur. Not to rule out the need may be greater for admin than grunt and his scores line up with that pretty good. Possible injury, hopefully not. Don't forget about the " Good of the service".

I feel for you in alot of ways. You and your dad are blood and no matter what happens between you he's still your dad. With all that said.... He may have a master plan here but you have to walk the grid squares he plots, Son.. If I had a recon contract and knew in my heart that was what I wanted and I knew of my physical and mental stability for this job was good to go. I would go for it...!! !!! !!!!!! With that said.... Things happen in training and yeh you could become a box kicker or rigger or cook or grunt etc etc instead of RECON MARINE.. But if its in your heart and there is a challenge set back. Ya regroup and you do the right thing.
ADAPT
IMPROVISE
OVER COME
Why is it you don't want to go Recon contract your dad hooked up? Why is it you want to going open contract 03 series instead?
What ever you do this is on you and no Pop's can't stop what you want in the end. You both have choices and both of you have to live with the aftermath of these choices as father and son for years to come.

Thanks man. I know in my heart yes I want to be Recon, but I also know my swimming ability, I easily can get a 290 on my PFT and I want recon but i still need more practice for the swimming, I mean i can swim good but I just don't have the indurance. During SOI I am trying out for Recon and I am going to give it my all and my heart and I hope I will make it. But I have to think reasonably, okay I break my ankle on the run, now I am stuck with being a cook, no disrespect to the cooks, but I dont mind being a grunt at all. I believe i will like it. This way I atleast have a back up plan. Thanks for the advice man.

Lost his chance? lol I think once he's been a grunt for a few months, or even while still at ITB, he'll wish he was a paper pusher !!! :bunny:

Thats a lie! I was told to go find the I-D-Ten-Tee form, and also told to ask Supply for a box of flightline...
It was so humiliating, I reported it up the chain. :nerd:

Ask your dad what the difference is....you can get shot or maimed just as easy in recon as you can infantry.
Is it a pride thing?
Was he in the Marine Corps?

Obviously you dont hang around too many admin guys haha. Some admin guys think they have something to prove so they are real dick heads and they PT too much for their own good. I remember the day I got promoted my MGySgt beat the hell out of my chevrons. Snake bites, while looking cool afterwards, are not fun at the time. Especially when everyone in your unit walks up and bunches you. OR "Hey Private! I need you to go get me the keys to the humvee!" Or The I-D-Ten-Tango form is always a good one you get hit with. I remember a group of Lance's running this new Private on island when I was a PFC. He forgot to do something so they "Took him back to bootcamp" so-to-speak. For some reason alot of admin guys are also prior Hats. Which can be good, in some cases, OR HORRIBLY WRONG, in most cases.
Oh stop complaining you are part of the Corps and this has been going on for a few hundred years. Every Marine gets Hazed and if you complain you will be put down as a cry baby. When you get promoted you get the Chevrons pinned on, also the Blood Stripes. Also Blood Wings if you earn them. There is also a Shell Back and that fun hazing. It is part of the Corps and has been going on for years. If you complain about it you will be known as a cry baby and to stay away from you. It is out of fun and years of History of the Corps. It is Marines liking each other just messing around and for you to pass it on to the next Boots coming in. It is respect for each other that it still goes on out of fun and humer. When you get promoted and all your buddies want to pin you, it is a right of Honor.

Was not complaing. Just stating a fact that is goes on on both sides of the house. Grunt or not we get hazed. I personally have no problem with it. I see it as a sign of respect and it is congragulatory. I definatly was not complaining. Though if I was to complain about it it would not be on here anyway.

The Recon enlistment option is designated UZ. The best chance of getting into Recon is to enlist with a UZ enlistment option contract. This enlistment option guarantees the enlistee the chance at getting into Recon.
Upon graduation of Boot Camp the Marine will attend the School of Infantry (SOI).
After SOI, the Marine will attend the Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC). After successful completion of this school the Marine will be assigned the Primary MOS of 0321 - Basic Reconnaissance Marine.
If a Marine fails any of the steps along the way, his contract is modified from UZ to UH as if he had enlisted into Combat Arms (Infantry).

There was some confusion about failing the Recon Indoc and where you get sent if that happens. This is some information I found to clear things up. Forgive me if it has since changed.

I am so glad somebody on here knows I'm a MAN ! !! !!!
I am so confused.... If I read right you ship in January right Poolee Calahan?
You have the positives to do what ya want yet you have negitives to back up the will to finish the positive you've got.
Get your head in the books.
Work on your weaknesses in swimming and other physical issues you may incounter along the way.
Go for it and don't look back till its over.
If you have a challenge adapt improvise and over come!!!
You are like who knows how many before you and those looking at you during indoc - selection etc know this. Be the best you can be, never let them see you mentally quit and recover if you don't make the mark on any challenge.
Good Luck and god speed in your challenge for the EGA and RECON

It ain't like the old days where you get infantry cause you wash out of some other mos. Infantry is a "desired" mos now and the slots fill fast. If you have a 0300 contract and that's what you want don't give it up. Personally down the road I think your pops will respect you more for sticking to your guns. I am not dissing family but once you step on those yellow foot prints you gain a whole new family. I have three blood brothers, but my closest brothers to this day are my Marine brothers. My son is now a Marine and we don't talk father and son any more, we talk like Marines. Whatever you decide - Stand tall in front of the man!
You guys better be careful picking on admin. Who makes sure your paperwork is squared away for leave and pay? Go ahead and make an enemy in admin, you'll be a broke Marine.
