CHRONOLOGY: Terrorist attacks in Yemen

Hamburg - The attack Wednesday on the US embassy in Sana'a is the latest targeting western institutions in Yemen. Others included:October 12, 2000: The US destroyer Cole is attacked by an explosive-laden speedboat in the port of Aden. 17 US marines die, 39 people are injured. The attack is attributed to al-Qaeda allies.

March 15, 2002: A day after US Vice President Dick Cheney's visit, a Yemeni throws a grenade at the US embassy in Sana'a. No damage is caused.

October 6, 2002: A dynamite attack on the French tanker Limburg kills a Bulgarian sailor. Some 14,000 tons of oil spill into the Gulf of Aden.

December 30, 2002: A 32-year-old shoots three Americans in a hospital run by Baptists in the town of Jibla, south of Sana'a. The gunman was said to be a member of the terrorist organization Islamic Jihad.

March 18, 2003: Two employees of a US oil company are shot dead by a Yemeni co-worker in Ma'rib province in northern Yemen. The assailant then takes his own life.

July 2, 2007: A suicide attack in vicinity of the Ma'rib Bar'an Temple kills eight Spanish tourists and two locals. Al-Qaeda is believed to behind the attacks.

March-April 2008: A series of terror attacks on police, authorities, diplomats, foreign companies and tourists shocks the country. An attack on the US embassy on March 18 kills a Yemeni guard. The US later withdraws all non-essential staff.
