Cops investigating weekend Marine death in New Bern

Sailor also hurt due to attack

NEW BERN - Officials are still investigating a Saturday night attack in New Bern that left a Marine dead and a sailor injured.
Marine Anthony Norman Gonzales, 19, who was stationed at Cherry Point, died after the attack. Joseph Alan Emile, 22, a sailor stationed at Cherry Point, was listed in stable condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Police have not said how Gonzales died, although he reportedly had numerous injuries. He was found in a parking lot at the intersection of Trent Road and Lowes Boulevard in New Bern about 2 a.m. Sunday by patrons leaving the Palms Entertainment Complex.
Police said the two men were sitting in a silver Mitsubishi when they were attacked by a group of black males. Police spokeswoman Beth Stevenson said Monday that police have no description of the assailants.
New Bern police found the car believed to have been involved in the killing. It was found Sunday afternoon off N.C. 55 in west New Bern. Stevenson said the car was being processed for evidence.
According to police, Gonzales, Emile and a small group of people went to the Palms early Sunday morning, but the Gonzales and Emile were not allowed in because they did not meet a dress-code requirement.
Police said Gonzales and Emile returned to their car in the parking lot across the street to wait for the rest of their group and were assaulted. The parking lot was described as an old auto salvage business, now used as an overflow parking lot for the club.
Patrons leaving the club found Gonzales, who died at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
Police said Emile was forced into the trunk of the Mitsubishi and the assailants drove away. Emile was able to escape the moving vehicle, and passing motorists alerted police. Emile was airlifted to Pitt Memorial.
Stevenson said the investigation is continuing as New Bern detectives interview witnesses, collect evidence and develop leads. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are assisting with the investigation.
