I have heard that Amphibious tankers are basically infantry....just that they roll in tanks. Is that an understatement or accurate enough?

Okay, your post is just full of inaccuracies.
There are no amphibious tankers. There's AAV Crewmen, which is what I think you're talking about. And there are M1A1 Crewmen (tankers). Neither are infantry. None of the above are soldiers.
