'08 SOLDIER BOYS ARE TOUR-OF-DUTIFUL SONS

By GINGER ADAMS OTIS
September 14, 2008 --

John McCain's teenage son, Jimmy, a lance corporal in the Marines, will embark on a second tour of duty by the end of 2008, The Post has learned.

That will make him the third offspring of a presidential or vice presidential candidate to go abroad for military service during this election year - and the first to do a repeat stint.

Track Palin, 19, son of Alaska Gov. and McCain running mate Sarah Palin, is an Army private in the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, which began deploying to Iraq Thursday.

And Capt. Beau Biden, 40, son of Barack Obama running mate Joe Biden, is also shipping out this fall.

He was called up as part of his Army National Guard unit to work as a military lawyer for the Army in Iraq.

Nineteen-year-old Jim- my McCain's Marine battalion is currently training as a rapid-response team that will be stationed on battleships equipped for amphibious assaults.

"The unit functions like a global 911 system," said a Marine official from Camp Pendleton, Calif., where Jimmy has been stationed since returning from his first tour of duty in Iraq in mid-February.

"They go where they are needed - but as of this moment, we have no information on where they will be sent."

Beau Biden and Track Palin's deployments were campaign-trail fodder for their vice presidential parents, although neither candidate offered up extensive details on where their children would be stationed.

Citing security restrictions, the Army won't confirm where Palin's unit will be sent. Both Palin and Biden are expected to be in Iraq for 12 months. With Post Wire Services
