New poster here, sorry if I am doing anything wrong.
Hi all,
My goal is to become an 0311 rifleman in the USMC. I have read around and seen that there is no way to guarantee the specific 0311 MOS. I am worried because in the 03XX category there is 0313 LAV Crewman. This worries me tremendously.. its not what I want. I would be satisfied with any other 03XX MOS besides 0313, and thrilled with 0311. To be honest, nothing else sounds appealing besides 0311. At least those are my thoughts as of now...
I cannot explain how much it bothers me knowing that I could make it that far, then be placed as an 0313.
So, with that being said, how much input would I get into my MOS? I understand that I get to list 3 jobs that I would prefer, and they try and put you there? Is that correct? Do they actually "try" or just fill?
This is such a dilemma to me because being a rifleman in the USMC has been my dream.

Every Marine is a rifleman first. Every Marine, no exceptions ( except the band ). This sets us apart from every other branch. A pilot goes through basic rifleman training like a truck driver, mechanic, supply clerk or grunt.
Having been an 0311 with LAR, the crewmen have it made. They carry nothing. They still get the opportunity to get shot at like the ground pounder, tanker or track. As a crewman you move from driver to gunner to vehicle commander. You get more ammo and bigger guns than the 0311. You can move faster.
The life of an 0311 is not as glorius as EB Games and Hollywood make it out to be. It can be a hard, miserable, uncomfortable, dirty life.

0311 is the hardest job in the Corps. Very very tough life.
BTW no one gets randomly assigned LAV you have to apply for it, just like STA or Recon. Not sure if they have an indoc, but I know you have to be an 0311 first.
While I was at SOI we had an 0352 Cpl who had to do it all over as an 0311 because he was going LAV.
0311 is the hardest job in the Corps. Very very tough life.

When did it change from LAR to LAV? When did you have to start applying for it?

Ok. It used to be LAV Bn then to LAI Bn. In 1993 or 94 it changed to LAR. At that time you didn't have to apply to be a crew man. If you made it through the school you got it. The scouts came sraight from SOI or regular straight leg units. Some , very few transfered in from 1st or 3rd LAR. If you couldn't do the job you got transfered out.

That's just the way it was when I was with 2 LAR. Lord only knows what changes the Corps has done since then. A lot changes in 12 years.

Not true they initially ask for volunters but voluntell 11s if the dont have enough who want to be 13's. I think there are a limited amount of active duty 0311 contracts available ask ur recruiter, if not dont worry only certain classes graduate 13's (cant remember which itb companys just know its not all of em) but like dont worry im in 2nd LAR and we have 13's who get used as scouts.

LOL! Wait til you're over 20 out! I didn't find out until a couple of years ago that H&MS is MALS now - WTF is THAT?
I was with 3d LAR and 1st LAR( on loan to them) as an 0311 and 0341 .
It was that they picked who went 0313 and those 0311 who wanted to be drivers was picked.
If LAR needed drivers, 0311 was the first pick.
0313 reminds me of FMF Corpsman, they get to shoot all the weapons.
They learn the 25mm, 81s, TOWs, and be scouts.
