I'm here in Parris Island at 4th Bat. in the Basic Marine Platoon. It's very boring here, considering my internet card gets no reception in my barracks, we basically look at this all day.. http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/290/epicboobsssqe2.jpg .. and some other stuff. I have about 7 weeks until I am able to go to MCT because I stress fractured my foot during the crucible, while I was duck walking the entire 5mile night hike...Yet some faggot chickened out because he was "tired" and got droped back 5+ weeks, and he even signed up as infantry.

Marines... I have some bad news.... General Robert Barrow, former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, member of the Chosin Frozen has past away and reported to St. Peter.... another Marine reporting for duty sir for I have served my time in Hell.
Also, Lt. Col. John Ripley, last Marine Hero of the Vietnam War also has past away and reported aboard with Gen. Barrow. Lt. Col. Ripley as a Captain was ordered to hold at all cost a bridge in the NVA Easter Offensive of 1972. While under fire placed 500 lbs of explosives under a bridge and blew up the bridge prevented a force of 20,000 NVA soldiers and 200 tanks from crossing thus delaying the fall of South Vietnam until 1975.
Gen. Barrow was Commandant when I joined the Corps. Both of these Great Marines will be sorely missed.

I miss those sand fleas so much I want to go back. I guess that's a testament to the character of the inmitigable United States Marine.

I was medically retired and then cleared for active duty in 2007. I've been pining for reenlistment for so long that my wife actually decided that I should go for it. How's that for support?

I'll be 28 next year and my reenlistment code requires me to go through Boot again. I'll be the grand old man of the training company. Oh joy. I've been having trouble getting my azz into gear.

A helpful boot from my fellow Marines would definitely get that fire started again.

San Diego Marine Boot Camp is like bigger brother to you guys in Parris Island.

Paradise Island sounds more like it.

Okay lets look at some facts here San Diego didnt have Marine Presence until 1915 where as there were Marines tooling about the Union Ships and shore parties that blockaded Beaufort, SC during the Civil War thats a 53 year head start. But Marines were not officially stationed there til 1891 thats still a 24 year head start.

Parris Island was Officially designated as a Marine Corps Recruit Depot on November 1, 1915....where as San Diego was officially designated as a Marine Corps Recruit Depot in 1948 we still have a longer streak.

Parris Island has its own rifle ranges and field training area. San Diego has to go and use Camp Pendletons.

Big brother...psshhhh hardly.....Parris Island is more like the Father of San Diego.

Now Hollywood go peddle your crap else where.

Oh and no hard feelings brother.....it's an Island thing.

http://www.wtv-zone.com/swanlover/military/PI_gate2.jpg

If you have been here, you know my name, My name is Parris Island.I was officially started in 1915 and I've seen recruits come and go by the thousands. If you were here when you got here by ferry boat, then you are truly old Corps. All recruits see my main gate only twice, once on the way in and once on the way out.Mostly you come by bus in the middle of the night. Tall, short, fat, skinny, black and white, long hair, short hair. You come through my main gate laughing some scared, mostly you act like teenagers, mostly you are teenagers. You each come here for your own reasons, but most come to test themselves, most need a direction in their lives. As you pass through my main gate your lives will change from that point on. I hope to see you leave as Marines, but you will not all leave together as Marines. Some will leave by themselves ,not Marines. They did not make the goal, my heart goes out to them, but not everyone can be a Marine. But today my heart is full of pride, for the next graduation of recruits, now MARINES, is leaving my front gate, teenagers no more but young men & women with a history to live up to.13 weeks and just look at the change. You know this is a happy day for me, but my best days are yet to come. That's when these Marines come back to see me 20, 30, 40 years from now. Oh yea, a lot of the old ones come back to see me, they have not forgottenOld Parris Island and I have not forgotten them. Former Marines and I have this bond, it's in our blood, it's PRIDE it is where it all started for both of us. My sad days are the ones that those that can't come back to see me those that were killed in WW1, WW11,Korea,Viet Nam, Beirut and all the little actions around the world. Hey, I've got to go have a bus load coming in tonight and one leaving in the morning...SEMPER FI!! You all come back and see me, you hear!

Is the Motovation ditch still there or has it been PC'd out? At the range our Senior would have Recruits from the moto platoon parade across the sinks while we were cleaning weapons. What a stench.

We had a "motivation ditch." It was called Ribbon Creek. I was in after the McKeon thing, but we still got a lotta threats about taking a hike to the creek. Happened once while we were pulling butts at the range. Ribbon Creek ran right behind us and we could see what they were threatening. Not a pleasant thought, wading in that thing.

Since PI came first, the very first recruits to train at SD had to have been trained by DI's who were reared at PI. Hmmm, is that SECOND or LAST???? Semper Fi Hollywood!

I have been searching the internet for a map of PI with the old buildings. I cannot recall my building number. 1st BN, the last building on the right facing the barracks from the Iwo Monument. Anyone know where a map is to be found?

When I went through San Diego 1st and 2d Battalion had the new (now old) barracks to live in. Only 3rd Bn was still in Quonsets, but not for long. I was in 2d Bn.

Parris Island has not changed just like the rest of the Corp., Everyone changes, we stay the same oldschool way. Look up the map on google earth and zoom in. The base has stayed the same only the uniforms changed.

Negative - That's why I asked if anyone had found any old maps...All the old buildings in 1st BN are long gone...Way back in the 70s when I was there I only saw a few old white wooden "H" style buildings left...one of them was mine, but with the new construction on the far side of the parade deck, it is hard to determine exactly where my barracks was. I have looked, but I haven't run across one yet.

When Hermogenes Marrero was in Marine boot camp, he recalls being the only recruit who didn't panic during simulated-chemical-warfare drills. "I'd sit there calmly with my gas mask on," Marrero says, "while a lot of other guys got scared and ran away." It was 1969, and Marrero, a New Yorker born in Puerto Rico, was fresh out of high school at the age of 17. But his composure caught the eyes of Marine instructors — and the next year, he says, he was at Camp Garcia on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, helping guard for 18 months chemical agents being tested by the U.S. Navy.
Today Marrero, at 57, believes he was too poised around those hazardous materials for his own good. In an affidavit filed last month in the U.S. District Court in Puerto Rico, where Marrero now lives, he says he is legally blind, uses a wheelchair, has battled colon cancer and chronic pulmonary illnesses, and was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, among other ailments. "I've been sick in some form or another since I was 25," says Marrero. He was stationed on Vieques, he adds, "for too long."
Most Vieques residents — who, as Puerto Ricans, are all U.S. citizens — would agree with Marrero. In 2007, more than 7,000 of them filed a federal suit, Sanchez v. United States, claiming that in the nearly 60 years after World War II that the Navy used a portion of the island as a firing range and weapons-testing ground it negligently exposed Vieques' population of 10,000 to dangerous levels of toxins. The community, according to several independent medical studies, has a cancer rate 30 times higher than that of Puerto Rico's main island to the west. The U.S. Justice Department has filed a motion to dismiss the suit, which collectively seeks health and property damages in the billions of dollars, claiming the Federal Government's sovereign immunity. A federal judge in San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital, is expected to make a ruling this fall. (See TIME's MAGZ 16,SEPT 2009
One thing the judge is waiting for is a deposition from Marrero, which the former Marine sergeant is scheduled to give next week (though Marrero is not actually party to the suit). Lawyers for the Vieques plaintiffs say his testimony lends credence to their assertions about the long-term effects of living on the 55-sq.-mi. (88 sq km) island during the last half of the 20th century — and about the federal health and environmental laws they allege the Navy violated. "His coming forward offers proof," says John Eaves Jr., a Mississippi lawyer representing the Vieques residents. "These are things the Navy has to answer for." The Pentagon refers questions about the suit to lawyers at the U.S. Justice Department, who are handling the case for the Defense Department. They say they can't comment on pending litigation. But in their dismissal motion, they cite similar Vieques cases earlier this decade in which judges upheld the claims of sovereign immunity.
Marrero says his job at Camp Garcia from 1970 to 1972 often entailed helping Navy officers test hazardous airborne chemicals on animals like goats. Many of the canisters he handled, he says, were labeled "112" for Project 112, a top-secret Cold War U.S. military program conducted between 1962 and 1973 that involved experiments with chemical and biological weapons. Project 112's records were finally declassified at the start of this decade, but the Pentagon as yet does not acknowledge a link between the chemical tests and the spate of illnesses suffered since then by servicemen like Marrero, who is still fighting to get his veteran's medical benefits. "I'd always ask how safe that stuff was and those Navy chemical guys always told me, 'It's safe, you'll be O.K., kid,' " Marrero says. "But I wasn't, and I'm not."
The Navy's half-century on Vieques was a controversial chapter in U.S. military history. Protests erupted after a stray bomb fired during a Navy training exercise killed a local security guard in 1999; a few years later, the Navy closed Camp Garcia and left for good in 2003. By then it was already conceding things it had long denied — such as its use of toxic materials like Agent Orange and depleted uranium. It also admitted that on at least one occasion, during a chemical-warfare drill in 1969 for a project called SHAD — for Shipboard Hazard & Defense, which was part of Project 112 — it had sprayed trioctyl phosphate, a chemical compound known to cause cancer in animals, as a simulant for nerve agents. When the Navy left, the island was declared a federal Superfund site for environmental cleanup. The Navy has cleared thousands of undetonated bombs and turned its area of the island into a fish and wildlife refuge.
Still, the federal Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) said in 2003 it found no negative effect on health from the Navy's decades on Vieques. Much of the scientific community howled at that verdict, given that independent studies of hair, vegetation and other local specimens indicate island residents have been exposed to excessive levels of lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. "The [ATSDR] conclusion seemed borderline criminal," says former Vieques mayor Radames Tirado, a plaintiff in the Sanchez suit who says at least 13 of his relatives there today have cancer. Says Arturo Massol, a biologist at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, "We've also found that since the Navy left, those contaminants have decreased eightfold. That's no coincidence."
As a result, Congress this summer sent the ATSDR back to Vieques to begin a review of its earlier findings. "If there is anything more we can do, it will be done," ATSDR director Howard Frumkin pledged on a visit to the island last month. The Navy itself had already realized it had more to do, setting aside an additional $200 million last year for seven more years of Vieques cleanup. Still, Viequenses complain the Navy is exacerbating the problem by detonating left-over bombs; the Navy insists it is the only safe way to dispose of them.
Marrero, meanwhile, says he spends much of his time today volunteering to help Iraq war veterans apply for their own benefits. "One of my jobs at Camp Garcia was to gauge the wind direction during those tests," he says. "If the wind ever shifted toward the population, I'd shout, 'Cease fire!' "
