Veterans tribute unveiled at Holcombe resort

By The Chippewa Herald

HOLCOMBE — Soldiers in Afghanistan will be able to see Sunday afternoon’s dedication of a tribute to the U.S. Navy and Marines Corps at Big Swede’s Resort on Highway 27 in Holcombe.

The ceremony that starts at 1 p.m. will be videotaped and photographed and e-mailed to the troops, said Barbara A. Schmidt, a Holcombe resident.

An anchor donated by Toy’s Scrap and Salvage in Eau Claire and painted by Carol Ahrens is the centerpiece of the ceremony. Schmidt said the owner of Big Swede’s, George Sutor, already has an eagle carved out of wood and a large rock painted with military symbols at his resort, and thought the anchor would be a good addition. The anchor will be unveiled at 3 p.m.

The dedication ceremony is hosted by the resort and former state Sen. David Zien.

A special dedication will honor Bill Leinenkugel, who served in the Marines in World War II and is the former president of Leinenkugel’s Brewing in Chippewa Falls.

Scheduled guest speakers include Ken Black, the deputy secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs; Bill Bottoms, an Air Force veteran who served as chairman of the Big Ten Conference in the VFW; and Dan McCann, an Army veteran and a clinical social worker for the Veterans Health Administration at the Chippewa Valley VA.

Families wanting to order updated military records, metals and medical records will be offered forms and assistance.

Free hot dogs and refreshments will be served.
