A few clubs for the troops

Modesto artist Bob Davidson expects to send more than 3,000 golf clubs and roughly 18,000 golf balls to Iraq, where soldiers such as his son, Robert Davidson Jr., can work off some stress on driving ranges they’re creating at bases throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.

Davidson and his Golf War effort, which he called Operation Driving Range, were featured Sept. 4 by The Bee’s Jeff Jardine, whose column then drew the interest of a Sacramento TV station. As a result of the coverage, golfers from country clubs and public courses from Turlock to Sacramento, including six in El Dorado County, are organizing donating gear collections.

Bob Davidson, who paints portraits valley soldiers and Marines who died in conflict and gives the pieces to their families, is working with the Army to ship the gear to Iraq.

Al Ford, owner of Cal-West Roofing in Modesto, volunteered his company’s yard as a staging area and Modesto’s Alfred Matthews auto dealership offered the use of a pickup to haul donated goods from the golf courses to the roofing yard, where they are being crated for shipment.
