I've been in DEP now since March and scheduled to leave next month. I've had two different recruiters and between both of them I have asked about 5 different times for the 03 field...the problem is they always say its full. Right now my job is 04 field and i really dont want that. I plan on makin the core my career and have 16 more years to do something else..but right now i want grunt life. I think someone told me that the fisical year? in the usmc starts october 1 and i could change my job is this true? will i be able to change my job?

First off, it's Corps, not core. And you can do a 'lat move' after serving 2 years in the fleet. If you don't want to wait that long to be a grunt, I would tell your recruiter that's what you want. You should be able to get that, but you might have to stay in the DEP a little longer then.

I simply refuse to believe the 03 field is full

HERE WE GO AGAIN,
SAME OLD CRAP AGAIN,
MARCHNG DOWN THE AVENUE,
WHEN WILL POOLEES EVER LEARN,
TO FILL OUT THE PROFILE AND READ THE RULES?
I'D BE GLAD AND SO WOULD YOU MARINES.....

Sorry Marines, I got carried away, LMAO! But how long has it been since a poolee did this same thing, asking the same question, and we give the same answers, over and over again?

Poolee..... read the rules of the site, finish your profile, use proper grammar, use spell check, use capitals where appropriate, sheesh. You will find us a whole lot more helpful if you do!

Oh and that search engine works great for answers also!

Tell him you want Infantry and wait for the fiscal year to start over, that is when there will be all new slots available.

Infantry fills up every single year. We have this conversation multiple times every single year.

If it is full, it is full. You can wait until October 1 to change your MOS or you can deal with your second choice. No new spaces are going to magically appear between now and then.

Tell him you're not shipping until you get your 03XX opening.

You control your destiny, not your recruiter.

You're the customer, the recruiter is the salesman. Its the salesman job to keep his customer satisfied, NOT the other way around.

I have a feeling there are some other mos's they can't fill or are having a hardtime filling but 03 full.........I ain't thinkin so, its the largest field and the Corps is expanding, plus dudes are Eas'ing everyday. But yeah you can wait if you want it.

Mikewebe, 03 fills every single year. There are only so many slots in ITB, when they fill up, they fill up. Take a look around, most of the poolees want to be grunts, and the people that don't find this website aren't any different. It really is full, and there really isn't anything that can be done about it until the new fiscal year rolls around.

E4B, you are correct. I didn't think about the ITB part, and yes most want it but do they go guaranteed. My covers off to you. I didn't pay attention to detail.

First off, 03XX is NOT the biggest field that we have in the Marine Corps. It is actually pretty close to the smallest. Read the Marine Corps Almanac for proof on that.

Secondly, Infantry (UH) is closed ALL the time. Each Recruiting Station is given a small portion of jobs to issue out each year. ALL of the Recruiting Substations (meaning those little offices near you) are pulling off that same list. Basically it's a big job pool with everyone in your state trying to swim in it and grab stuff they want.

Trust me, if Infantry was open, the recruiter would give it to you. It doesn't matter to him what job you get...and if that would give you want you want, then so be it.

It's about being a Marine first...and you're job second.

Don't listen to these fools around here talking about wait for Infantry etc; etc; Don't sign etc; etc;

If you want to be a United States Marine, you will bust your butt to be one. It is unfortunate that Infantry is not open. However as stated above, you can switch in 2 years to it. You need to get your foot in the door to the best branch of service. The Few and The Proud, The Marines!

Sorry, but with respect to Sergeant Andreas here, thats recruiter talk right there. 2 years is quite a long time if you're doing something you really don't want to do. One of my sergeant instructors at OCS shipped to boot camp with an "open contract" because he said he was impatient, and he just wanted to go to boot camp.

After MCT, he said a Corporal came to tell him his MOS, he expected Machinegunner, rifleman or something infantry related. Instead, when the Corporal said - "Private T, 3381 Food Service Specialist", he started crying and wrote his recruiter a letter saying he was going to cut his nuts off !!

It was a funny story, and obviously he's doing well now, being a SNCO and an OCS Sergeant Instructor, but the moral of the story is - don't let that be you. Ship with the MOS that you want.

Patience is a virtue.

It's recruiter talk but also future Marine Corps talk, Corporal.

If people are only joining the United States Marine Corps for ONE particular job...and if they don't get it they won't join...then we will soon feel the pain of that.

What I ask everyone is: Do you wanna be a United States Marine?

That's the most important question.

Now in all seriousness I'm not sitting here saying I am giving everyone crappy jobs etc; (what's really crappy though?)...I mean if they say they wanna do Infantry...and we have none. They can do Combat Engineer...or even MP is something along those lines.

You have to ask them: What do you mean by Infantry? They may just say...I wanna carry around a rifle or weapon all day?

Well MP has a pistol by their side all the time...you gota probe more questions to find out why exactly.

That's what I mean.

It's about being a Marine 1st. That's the bottom line.

Whether they get the MOS they're interested in will be a factor that affects their lives for at a minimum, the next two years, so it shouldn't be taken lightly. Of course all the poolees here aspire to be United States Marines. But after they complete boot camp and earn the title, they also want to be doing the stuff that they signed up to do.

Someone wanting infantry means exactly that - when they hit the fleet, they want to be a grunt. That is, going on humps, spending a lot of time in the field, MOUT training, getting a lot of trigger time, cleaning weapons until your fingers fall off - not sitting at a desk doing paperwork, not PMing vehicles and doing SL-3 inventory, not cooking meals in the galley.

With that being said, my advice to the poolee is that, know what you want and make sure you get it, but that doesn't mean make your recruiters' life difficult. There are many other combat arms MOSes out there, so keep your mind open.

I shipped to boot camp with a Motor T MOS, infantry was full, I wanted to go ASAP and my recruiter said he had Motor T and NBC Defense Specialist open. I chose Motor T thinking that I'd be doing some badass Black Hawk Down type stuff...little did I know...

Its just not my cup of tea. Good thing my career will be taking a new direction by May...
