The Woodmen of World of Lodge 564 wanted to show the military just how much they care through an evening of food and fellowship.

The organization recently treated 50 Marines from the Wounded Warriors Barracks aboard Camp Lejeune to two hours of dinner and live entertainment at the Jacksonville USO. "A lot of them aren't from North Carolina and many have families in other states and we wanted to make sure they know we care about them," said Woodmen of the World member Joey Anderson.

About 60 Woodmen members served barbeque, cole slaw, and more than 50 desserts as way to say thanks to the wounded warriors for their sacrifices.

Woodmen of the World is a national non-profit organization known for volunteering in various community service activities, such presenting U.S. flags to various fire departments, libraries and other organizations for the past 60 years.

"We are an organization that love our our flag and love our country and I couldn't think of a better way to show support to those who were wounded in battle from protecting our country," said Lodge 564 president Donald Shepard.

As an employee and member for 10 years, Anderson said many of the Woodmen of the World members in Onslow County are former servicemen and felt that sharing a special dinner with fellow servicemen was an event that they would be pleased to continue for many years.

"One of our members suggested that we do this and it won't be the last time," Anderson said. Andrew Woolard of Sneads Ferry and Woodmen member Tina Brown sang patriotic and gospel songs to the Marines to lift their spirits.

Furniture Fair president Itchy Popkins also participated by donating door prizes for the event.

"I think it helped them know there are a lot of people here that care and their spirits were definitely lifted." Anderson said. "They enjoyed the fellowship and hearing how much we appreciated them."

Anderson said it was especially rewarding when Marines came up to them and expressed appreciation for the dinner and fellowship.

"I think they really enjoyed themselves," Anderson said. "We wish we could do more, but we will definitely do this again."
