Plain Talk, Please II (2/7 Marines)

Thanks for all the feedback on the issue of 2/7 casualties and public information. I appreciate all of you taking the time to post notes -- especially those who disagreed with my point that we ought to know as much as possible about what's going on in those places where we send Americans to serve.

From your posts and private notes, I hear tremendous pride from Marine families, and also the sense that having a loved one at war is burden enough without making things more difficult and maybe more dangerous by releasing a lot of information to the public. Got it.

My original argument, though was on behalf of parents and families who were writing ME about rumors of horrendous casualties being suffered by 2/7 in Afghanistan. The families seemed to feel they couldn't get accurate information from the chain of command.

That sounds like a problem that needs fixing.

But I'm still worried about the disconnect between the American public, and the very small community of folks and families who volunteer for wartime duty. How to fix that?
