Active-duty and civilian personnel who use their own vehicles for government business can now earn a few cents extra in gas mileage.

The General Services Administration has raised the temporary-duty mileage rate from 50.5 cents per mile, to 58.5 cents per mile, the Air Force announced this week.

It applies to all uniformed personnel and civilian employees traveling on official business by privately owned automobile or motorcycle, effective Aug. 1.

The change follows the mid-year mileage rate increase set by the Internal Revenue Service. Due to rising gas prices, the IRS beginning July 1 is allowing motorists to claim 58.5 cents per mile — up from 50.5 cents — for business on their 2008 tax returns.
