Ask 10 Marines who the greatest Marine ever was and I'm guessing 7 out of the 10 will say Chesty Puller. Chesty Puller was a great Marine, but personally he doesn't even come close on my list. I was curious to know who you all think the greatest Marine ever was.

Here is my top five:

1. John Lejeune - Made the Corps what it is today
2. Earl Pete Ellis - amphibious warfare prophet
3. Victor Krulak - amphibious warfare innovator
4. Dan Daly - The finest Marine NCO ever
5. Smedley Butler - Two Medals of Honor and a Brevet Medal

Just curious to see what others think.

The Greatest Marines are Combat Corpsmen. The bravest, most courageous Marines I have ever met!

2 CMH's and a Navy Cross puts him right on top of my list.

Will we judge by the greatest number of medals and awards?
I wish to add this Marine;
The commanding general of our 1st Marine Division, Maj. Gen. Oliver P. "O. P." Smith.
A very soft spoken Marine, but still one hades of Marine!
His foresight and not really carrying out of the Army Commanding General's order to go east of the Chosin Reservior and his foresight in building that airstrip.
Help insure that the 1st Marine Division, would fight its way out to the sea.
Every era has had its share of "Great Marines" but to cite a few, might be injustice to those that did their "JOB" without any award or medal.
If Valor is the citerion by which we will judge.
Then we could name several Divisions.
A favorite Marine of mine was a 2nd Lt in the 6th Marine Regiment during WWI.
2nd Lt. Clifton Cates USMC, later to become Commandant.
I considered my Platoon Commander of 2nd Platoon Bravo Co 3rd Recon Bn.
1st Lt. Frank Stanley Reasoner among those "Great Marines".
Gave his life trying to save his radioman in the Republic of Vietnam, 1965.
So we all have our favorites among those "Great Marines"

activity for one of my advanced years) and reflection (downing a couple of San Magoos), I want to change my opinion. My selection for the "greatest Marine" would be for the Marine to the left of me and the one to the right of me. I know they can counted on no matter what!
