Poolee's/Marines,

While I was at the mall today I struck up a conversation with a man who looked to be in his late teens or early twenties. I guess he happened to notice I was wearing my poolee shirt [I was on my way to a function]because he started talking about the Marines. He asked me things like how my training was going and why I wanted to join the Marines. Then he asked me what my job was going to be. I told him I was getting either artillery or armor. He then said "Ahh man you don't wanna do that. If you want to be a 'real' Marine, you'd go infantry". I said that those jobs are what I really wanted to do and he said, "Well do what you want. My brother is in the Marine infantry and I know that they have it tougher than any other job which makes you a real man. The other jobs are just support and you wouldn't really be helping out that much". I was a little upset for the rest of the day. I did let it get to me. Here I am talking to a civilian who knows I'm about to go into the service and he bashes on what I want to do? I mean, I know artillery and armor is important. He made me feel as though I'm not important anymore. Its these people that make me ashamed for standing up for this country. It still bothers me a little bit but I have been reading up on those jobs and it makes me feel better knowing they are important to the Marine Corps.

Thanks for reading and sorry for the long rant.

Shake it off. If he was a Marine he was just expressing pride in his job in The Corps. If he was just a civilian, **** 'em and the horse he rode in on.

You got more things to attend to than what a passing strangers says to you at the mall.

Don't Listen to peoople like that because they are obviously ignorant. Every single person in the Marine Corps is important. And as far as being less of a Marine thats ridiculous. What makes a Marine a Marine is bootcamp and the brotherhood.

Big Gunz the guy who you spoke to wasn't even a Marine so f*ck what he has to say. A Marine is a Marine no matter what your job is in the Corps. It doesn't matter if you're in artillery or sit behind a desk. Once you graduate and earn the title you're a brother. Don't let that sh!t get you down stay focused and carry on.

.Big Guns,,,, I was less of a Marine,,,, 2841, radio repair. When those Nam grunts sent me basket cases I'd fix the damm things, and put em back on line. Kept em talkin their chit. My contribution, And I ain't ashamed about it. I mighta been shamed if those grunts could fix their own, But that was MY JOB.

:usmc:Listen and Listen Hard every MOS in the Corps is important from Admin to Force Recon. Admin gets the four Bs for all MOSs that's including supply. The four Bs are Ammo, Beans (food), Medical (firstaid gear), Bedding (other gear). Every MOS is important to the fight and to the Grunts. Motor-T gets the gear up to the front lines for them and they do get attacked in convoy. Grunts in a Fire Fight love the sound of Hueys, Cobras, Tanks, Trackers, Arty and other Marines coming into the fight to help them, these are other MOSs. It is the Air/Ground Team that is the Marine Corps and it is not all Grunts doing it. How do the Grunts get the gear up to the front or cover fire from Helos, These are not just support Marines these are up front Marines in important other MOSs. You ask a Grunt when they are in a heavey Fire Fight what they wish for ? They wish for Airwingers, Tracks, Cannon Cockers, Motor-T with 50 Cals and MK-19s. So you ask your self in the whole relm of a fire fight it is a team effort of all MOSs.

No matter what MOS you have, a Marine is A MARINE. Don't let that talk get you down. You are still going to go through 13 weeks of hell like an infantry Marine goes through. You will be proud to carry the title of Marine.

Did he think Intel wasn't Marines too? Without Intel and those types of fields ain't no grunt gonna know where the **** they going. And if they did know, they ain't going to know if there is an ambush around the corner where an Intel member might have seen it.

How 'bout them cooks. You wanna go live in a base with no food you go right ahead..

And how do you expect any grunt to get to the place they need to be or the country they need to be without the people flying or driving them there?

That's what I would have said to him. Sounds like he is just wuss who didn't join himself because he is too afraid and so he tries to make the ones with true heart feel bad.

I was 3381 Food Service Specialist....a Cook. I hope you told this motherfu**er to go f*ck himself.:usmc:

lol@baking a cake.

Hey woody, what are you gonna do without rifle cleaning gear, ammo, knives, weapons, clothing, equipment, vehicles, or anything?

Yeah you'd still be moto and try to kill people, but only for a day or to, OH WAIT, thats in Hawaii where the weather is nice year round. In Jacksonville in the winter, with no cold weather gear? Ouch...

Biggunz90-
Forget about this unworthy piece of crap. By the very action of you wanting to join the military and defend your country makes you a better person. Every Marine is important, every MOS is important. You will fight for the freedoms this douche bag takes for granted.
Stand Tall. Your are a future Marine!

Four points:

1. ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE! It doesn't specify any job requirements.

2. MARINE is enough said!

3. What is more important in your body, your left foot, your big toe on your right foot, your pinky on your left hand, your gall bladder, or some other part of your body. The Marines are a body that work together to keep this country alive and well. It does not matter what piece of the body you are, because all Marines serve a necessary purpose!

4. LESS OF A MARINE: WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN? THERE'S NO SUCH THING! A MARINE IS A MARINE, IS A MARINE!

Thanks to all of you I appreciate this. I'm not worried about it anymore. I'm still gonna train as hard as I was and keep my head up because I know I will earn the title and help out my [future] brothers.

Thanks again.

ACHPED, I'm reading this that you have yet to pay a visit to PTA. After the lava dogs eat your boots and you spend a night curled up in a poncho liner wishing the snow would stop you can tell us how much fun Hawaii is.

Hahaha, my unit got back from PTA in March...I got here in April. Soooooo lucky lol.

They were up there in March, and my buddy who's from the big island was there, hes like "I never knew there was a place on the big island that sucked as much as that place did..."

I'll be at PTA probably Autumn of '09, but until then....alohhaaa babbyyyy

PTA.... aah the memories... 3 trips there; 2 set of black boots destroyed. And I was a driver then... I swear that place isn't right, it's either snowing, raining, freezing, hot as hell, or just plain misrable. I'd take NTA or CTA over PTA any day.

What's PTA?

Pohakuloa Training Area - on the Big Island of Hawaii, it's where everyone from K-Bay goes to really light shiat up. Very rough terrain, and not a fun 30 day trip, you don't think you're in Hawaii when you're there I'll tell you that.

The major restrictions to training at PTA are the presence of the lava flows and environmentally sensitive areas discussed above. Weather conditions are generally conductive for training activities; however, fog often prevents helicopters from using the runway. The use of the area is also restricted by the cost of transporting troops, equipment and vehicles from Oahu. Because of this, Army and Marine Corps exercises are few in number and last for several weeks.

Are they serious? There are soldiers or Marines at PTA year round, as soon as one group leaves another group goes. Few in number? I wish. My buddy who's PCSing to Pendleton has been here 3 and a half years and has been to Japan for 7 months, Iraq for 7 months...and STILL squeezed in 6 PTA visits.

As a former grunt I know that we counted on other Marines to complete our job.If it wasn't for Admin,Air Wingers,Motor T,Cooks and all the other fields we woudn't be an effective fighting force but because of them we are the best.We especially depend on Artillery and Armor. You just had a run in with a know it all civilian puke who would never dream of wearing a uniform and serve his country.Being a grunt I have a lot of pride in the Infantry and sometimes I like to give a Air Winger a hard time but I know that his job is just as important.Hold your head up high and go earn your title.Good luck we all wish you are best.
