PARRIS ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Recruits on Parris Island are trying to beat the heat.

Today, Marines black flagged recruit training. For many recruits, that means training has been moved indoors or under shade and in some cases, postponed.

However, crucial training that is required for graduation such as on the crucible or rifle range training continues. But Marines say they take extra precautions to make sure recruits don't get a heat related injury.

"We train all of our staff from the Drill Instructor's coming out of DI school all the way up to the series commanders, company commanders that are in positions of leadership to recognize and carry out prevenative measures to recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion," said Parris Island Marine, Lt. Josiah Nicely.

Recruit training is black flagged when the temperature hits 90 degrees or higher. Marines say they haven't had an unusual amount of heat-related injuries this season.
