I started this as a response to another post. Now I want to add to it.

"You can be in the Army, you can join the Air Force, but you become a Marine."
End Quote.

Once THAT is understood, there is nothing more that needs to be said.

It answers ALL questions.

Q. What is a Marine? A. It is something you become.

Q. Yes, but WHAT is a Marine? A. It is what I AM! Define ME and you define MARINE!

Q. That man standing over there, is he a Marine too? A. Yes, he is.

Q. But you're four inches taller and 40 lbs heavier than he is. A. Yes, that's about right.

Q. He's wearing a uniform, and you're not. A. No, not anymore.

Q. He's an airplane mechanic, you're an infantryman. A. Right.

Q. You drink and smoke, he doesn't. A. Right again.

Q. He's single, you're married. A. Right again.

Q. You're loud and love to party, he isn't and doesn't. A. I guess so.

Q. He'd kill if he had to, but you, that's your job. A. O.K.

Q. You retired, but he's getting out when his enlistment is up. A. I wish him well.

Q. But you are both Marines? A. Right!

Q. I don't understand. A. Of course not, how could you, you're not a Marine.

Change the dialogue, and it's a scene that has been played out thousands of times. They think they know us, but they don't. They think they understand us, but they never will.

You can spend a lifetime trying to explain it to a civilian, and they still won't get it. But to a fellow Marine, all it takes is a simple "Semper Fi" and a "Welcome Home", and THAT says it all. Always has, always will.
