The extreme heat we're experiencing is something Marines and Sailors at Camp Lejeune must train in before deploying overseas.

But Tuesday, just before noon, a black flag was raised at Camp Lejeune stopping all training due to the intense heat. The base uses an automated heat stress system, that calculates temperature, humidity, and dry and wet heat to see what the heat stress will be on the body of a Marine when training. The black flag signified that temperatures were 90 degrees or higher, and that its time to halt all outside physical training.

Besides following the flag system, Marines aboard the base are educated on how to hydrate properly and look for warning signs of any heat related illnesses.
