Combat claims 29 Palms Marine

TWENTYNINE PALMS — A Marine from the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center was killed in combat Monday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense has announced.
Pfc. Ivan I. Wilson was a 22-year-old from Clearlake, a town of about 15,000 people northwest of Sacramento.
Wilson died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, based in Twentynine Palms.
His local newspaper, The Press Democrat, reports Wilson’s father said he was killed when he stepped on an explosive device.
Family and friends who spoke to The Press Democrat described Wilson as an intelligent young man who loved reading science fiction, adventure and philosophy.
In his honor, Sacramento Capitol flags were flown at half-staff.
The 2/7 is in Afghanistan to train and mentor the national police and fight the Taliban.
