Navy launches sport bike safety course

By 13News

NORFOLK – Sailors and Marines who ride sport bikes on or off base are now required to take a safety course.

The Military Sport Bike Rider Course also is mandatory for Department of Defense civilian personnel who ride sport bikes on base.

The eight-hour course is designed to save lives.

Since October 1, 2007, 19 of the 21 motorcycle fatalities have occurred on sport bikes, Navy officials noted.

Sport bikes are light-weight, performance bikes with riders in a forward-leaning position and feet aft of their center of gravity, and include sport, supersport, and sport touring motorcycles.

The course includes classroom time as well as practical experience out on the range

The program’s goal is to train all 8, 223 sport bike riders nationwide by October 1.

The Naval Safety Center partnered with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to create the course.
