LAS VEGAS -- San Diego State football team will have fall boot camp -- literally.

Beginning Aug. 4, the Aztecs will spend their first three days of fall camp at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base in San Diego

"We are extremely excited to partner with the Marines right there in San Diego," coach Chuck Long said. "It's our way of giving back to the Marines. It's a win-win. We're going to be available to them ... Be around their coaches and make it as interactive as they want. They have four or five teams on that base, and they want their coaches to get around us."

Long said he'd been thinking about training on the base for a while. After the San Diego State golf team spent a night on the base and had a positive reaction, Long put into motion a plan to get his 105 players in the barracks for the first day of camp.

The trip, Long said, would be one of learning and appreciation. He said he'd have surprises for his players, which might include a routine similar to a boot camp. The players and coaches will sleep in the barracks and eat in the mess hall. They'll practice on the field where the Marines play.

"As long as it's nothing like 'Full Metal Jacket,'" running back Tyler Campbell said. "It's just an opportunity for us to get closer to each other as a team, being in a different place, a different atmosphere."

It will also be a chance for the Aztecs to learn about leadership before the team comes home on Aug. 7 to resume fall camp on campus.

"I want our guys to be around the troops and also get with their leadership and give us some of their leadership techniques and philosophies and teach that to our young guys," Long said. "As a head coach you look for any and all edges you can get in the game of football. I look at this as an edge and that's the way we'll go into it."

SAN DIEGO STATE FOOTBALL NOTES: Training camp or boot camp?

By SCOTT BAIR - Staff Writer

The San Diego State football team will conduct its first three days of fall training camp at Camp Pendleton, practicing in front of the Marines and sleeping in the barracks.

The Aztecs will be in North County from Aug. 4-7 before heading back to campus and its regular practice routine.

"It's a win-win all around," San Diego State coach Chuck Long said. "We're going to show them how we practice, and they're going to teach us about their leadership program and how they go about their business. Going up there means a lot to us. It's a way to show that we care and to give back to them in a way. We're going to make the practices as interactive as possible and try to get everyone involved."

Injury updates

A trio of Aztecs players have been injured since spring football practice ended in May.

Linebacker Russell Allen (Vista High) fractured his thumb during summer workouts and will wear a cast during fall camp, but he shouldn't miss any time.

Offensive lineman Tommy Draheim recently had surgery on his right shoulder and will be out until October.

Defensive end Michael Snead had an injured hip surgically repaired and will miss fall camp. His return in uncertain, but Long expects him to be back in September.

Draheim and Snead played sparingly as freshmen in 2007.

Tight end Eric Miclot, a Vista grad who missed all of 2006 and 2007 with a knee injury, is healthy again and will participate in fall camp.

Sampson to miss camp

Athletic wide receiver DeMarco Sampson, who displayed his potential in spring practice after missing the last two seasons with a foot injury, has let his grades lapse and will miss fall camp.

Sampson is taking classes during the school's second summer session in hopes of regaining the academic standing necessary to play during the season.

"DeMarco's still on the team," Long said. "I believe he'll do well and eventually be able to play."

DBs leave

Backup defensive backs Josh Walker and Ray Patterson are no longer a part of the team for undisclosed reasons.
