Quincy, Mich. -

Four years ago Jared Himes graduated from Quincy High School with a dream in his mind and a scholarship from the Branch County Flying Club in his pocket.

The Marines beckoned and Saturday at the Coldwater Township Hall, Himes was fulfilling that dream as he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps before family and friends, as he prepares to go to Quantico, Va., for further training and then to Pensacola where he will take flight.

Among those friends Saturday was one going back to his pre-school days and a fellow QHS grad, Richard Field, who is a Marine stationed in New River, N.C., and secured a leave to travel home for his lifelong friend's commission ceremony and to perform with him his ceremonial first salute.

Himes, who has been a reservist, has now graduated from Western Michigan University as a part of the requirement to be an aviator, with a degree in aviation business and administration.

"I'm pretty proud of him," said mother Patti Fraley, who was on hand with stepfather Dan Fraley and father Timothy Himes.

Grandfather John Luce, a pilot, was also present, a factor in the young Hime's love of flying.
