Marine commandant approves running tights

ARLINGTON, Va. — Marines can now run in comfort now that Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway has approved running tights for male and female Marines.

The tights must be the same color and length as the shorts that come with Marines physical fitness uniforms, a recent Corpswide message said.

"Tights may not be worn in lieu of the trunks," according to the Marine Corps Administrative Message, or MARADMIN.

Because it’s hard to find running tights that are the exact length of the shorts, Marines are given about an inch of leeway, said Mary Boyt, of the Marine Corps Uniform Board.

But an inch or so is all you get.

"Don’t wear knee-length tights with thigh-length shorts," Boyt said.

The commandant disapproved a recommendation from the uniform board to add an element to the standard PT uniform to reflect light so it can be seen at night, she said.

The uniform board only narrowly recommended adding the reflective element, Boyt said.

"There was concern about reflectivity in a combat area, and we have reflective belts and vests that Marines can wear as well," she said.

Other decisions:
The soft-white bosom shirt remains mandatory for male officers when wearing their dress blue uniforms, both alpha and bravo.
For now, Marines will not be issued an extra set of woodland green and desert camouflage utility uniforms, Boyt said.
Marines cannot wear command identification badges on their utility uniforms with the exception of select sailors identified in the Corps message, who are authorized to wear the Command Senior Enlisted Leader Identification Badge, she said.
Female Marines can wear dress shoes with up to three-inch heels, she said. The old standard was two-and-a-half inches, but such shoes were hard to find in stores.
