Harley Riders Give Blood

Essex Junction, Vermont - July 12, 2008

The American Red Cross always runs short of blood donations during the summer.

But the Harley-Davidson dealer in Essex Junction found a way to help out. Members of the Harley Owners Group stepped forward. So did the U.S. Marines -- at least a contingent of Vermont leathernecks.

It was one of the larger blood drawings conducted by the Red Cross.

Dave Pearson, the owner of Green Mountain Harley-Davidson, told Channel 3, "The Red Cross collects probably half of the blood in all the United States. And they raise somewhere around six million pints a year. We're looking for 105. So we figure our goal is pretty good. But you know, only five percent of the population donates blood, and 95 percent of the other people who end up in need -- and so to see those five percent of the people here is pretty awesome."

The Harley owners set their blood drive goal at 105 pints because this is the American motorcycle company's 105th anniversary.
