Commander reports on Marines' missions

The fighting is not easy.

However, U.S. Marines are in Afghanistan and Iraq to succeed.

"I assure you they will accomplish what is at hand," Lt. Col. M.P. Hubbard told the desert chapter of the Marine Corp League at a luncheon Wednesday at Woodhaven Country Club.

Hubbard is the commanding officer of the 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms.

Two of his four battalions are fighting in Afghanistan and in al Anbar province in Iraq, said the native Virginian, who has participated in operations in Liberia, Bosnia, Somalia, Haiti and Iraq.

With al Anbar province considered to be "a deadly and volatile area," Hubbard said the presence of Marines he commands has decreased the daily violence.

Members of the 7th Marine Regiment have also helped train the Iraqi army, Hubbard said.

In Afghanistan, the battle is tougher for the Marines.

There, "they are in contact with the enemy every day" fighting, Hubbard said.

The Marines are there to help establish safe areas so Afghanistan's national police can execute the country's laws, he said.

As retired marine D.A. Nanna listened, he said there is no question - today's war is much more difficult than previous wars.

"It's not a uniform of one color up against a uniform of another color," said Nana, who served at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

There's more challenge in figuring out the enemy, he said.
