Foundation offers $1 million in scholarships to families of war dead

Associated Press

Children and spouses of coalition members killed in the war with Iraq can seek $1 million in college scholarships donated by Anheuser-Busch, the company said Friday.
The program will be administered for free by the Intrepid Museum Foundation which, like the beer distributor, has a history of support for the U.S. armed services.

The scholarships will cover part of the cost of a college or vocational education, which will ensure the money is spread to more people, said Bill White, president of the foundation.

“You can imagine what $2,500 or $10,000 would do to get someone over the top, to get them to that school,” White said. “It’s a significant contribution.”

The foundation plans to get in touch with families of every coalition solider killed during the war, including British soldiers, to inform them of the scholarships, White said.

Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Richard Myers and other military leaders joined company and foundation leaders in announcing the “Fallen Heroes Fund.” Those seeking information on the scholarships can call Dave Winters, the foundation senior vice president, at 212-957-7020.
