Hello fellow Leathernecks!
I was talking to some buddies at a July 4th party, and of course Boot Camp was one of the only topics. I was on Parris Island in August '78. Did our squad bays have AC? I remember fans there, but I don't remember the squad bays being awful.

I don't think so. I was there for the Pers/Admin Chief course in '79, and the open squadbay I lived in only had fans.

Thanks Master Gunny. It must be me. I don't remember the heat in '78. I went back in 2003 for a visit, thought I would melt. Must be the aging process.

Sand fleas must've been quite a problem with open windows...

Was there from July - Oct 77 and yes the a/c in the squadbays worked well, too well. Especially as summer grew to autum. It seemed to me that my first cold weather training was conducted as the nights grew colder and the a/c was cranked up. Or so it seemed.

I was there Jun/Aug 78 and don't recall a/c or fans. I remember the windows being open 24/7. Kinda foggy memory however.

Don't forget there were still two types of barracks at PI at this time. The recruits' cinderblock barracks and the forming barracks which were the WW2 barracks with a door at each end. And they definitely didn't have A/C.

No. It was red brick, right across the street from recieving and right in front of the yellow foot prints. 1st bat was still wood. we done the range there. shot a 242 out of 250. 9 bulls in a 3" circle with a maggies drawers! My PMI went nuts on the pits.

Back in the day,the only (new) brick barraks, were the rifle range. They had AC,but it was winter. They had heat, but it was kept cool, didn't see the over head steam pipes, like at mainside.
Weather conditions made it possable for every body to qualify. It rained for about 4 days,on and off, windy and muddy.Found out from the guys in the butts, that the black or white tape wouldn't stick.
Bulls all over......

Not in my barracks jetdoc

Me neither Wildcat....and as you remember we were constantly running back and forth, from one side of the squad bay, to the other and I don't recall running into any fans. Although a lot of the times we had our mattress' held out in front of us as we ran so my vision may have been obscured, lol.

No A/C at PI in the BN. barracks so you can stay acclimatized....Do they still wear "Chrome Domes" and give out salt tablets?
