New Valley Father Will Watch Birth from Iraq

Technology is helping one valley family unite for one of the most important moments of their lives.

There are thousands of soldiers overseas missing life-changing events everyday. One Valley woman said goodbye to her husband a few months ago figuring he'd miss the delivery of their first child, but then she heard about a group named “Freedom Calls”.

Just days from delivery first-time mom Jaimie Mathews is relaxed and ready to go. It's incredible considering her husband is serving in the marines and currently commanding a platoon in Iraq. He just left in April.

The couple figured when it was time for Jaimie to deliver, dad would be there in spirit only. But thanks to a non-profit group, this proud dad will participate in his daughter's birth.

Freedom calls is a foundation that links military families through video conferencing bringing an overseas loved one to the life changing events back home.

In the last few months they helped several deployed parents witness graduation ceremonies, parent teacher conferences and many births.

They're hoping the technology will erase the thousands of miles between them and keep the new family close until Joshua Mathews returns in the fall.

Freedom Calls is a non-profit group that facilitates about 2,000 video conferences every month.
