CAMP PENDLETON ---- A Marine was found dead Saturday afternoon in Area 27 of Camp Pendleton, military officials said Sunday.

The name of the victim is being withheld until 24 hours after family members have been notified of the death, officials said.

No information about the victim or the death was made available.

Officials said they have started an investigation.

Dead Marine identified as crewman from Virginia

CAMP PENDLETON: – A Marine found dead Saturday evening in Area 27 of Camp Pendleton has been identified as Sgt. Sean K. Webster, 23, of Fairfax, Va.

Webster was an assault amphibious vehicle crewman assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion West on the base north of Oceanside. He joined the Marines in September 2002 and earned numerous awards, base officials said.

The cause of death is being investigated by base officials and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Death of Va. Marine in California investigated

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Marine Corps authorities investigating the death of an Iraq combat veteran at Camp Pendleton say they have not ruled out the possibility of homicide.

The Marine Corps said the body of 23-year-old Sgt. Sean K. Webster of Fairfax, Virginia, was discovered Saturday.

Webster was twice awarded the Purple Heart. The North County Times reported that his first Purple Heart came after he was wounded in June 2005 bombing during a raid near the Syrian border. The second came after an anti-tank mine exploded under his vehicle in Anbar province in September 2005.

The Marines say the death was not an accident, and spokesman Lt. Ken Kunze said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has not ruled out homicide. The circumstances have not been released. -- The Associated Press
