BROCKPORT — A Brockport man was one of three Marines killed in a suicide bombing in Iraq on Thursday.

Capt. Phil J. Dykeman, 38, was killed in Karmah, Anbar province, west of Baghdad. The victims were attached to the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Regimental Combat Team, from the 2nd battalion, 3rd regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Dykeman, the leader of the battalion’s Fox Company, joined the Marines in June 1991, according to published reports. He had been awarded the Purple Heart.

The two other Marines were identified as Lt. Col. Max A. Galeai, 42, of Pago Pago, American Samoa; and Cpl. Marcus W. Preudhomme, 23, of North Miami Beach, Fla.

The bomber, dressed as a police officer, detonated his explosives at a meeting of U. S.-backed Sunni tribal sheiks, killing more than 20 people.
