Air Force colonel acquitted of rape at Texas base

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – An Air Force colonel has been acquitted of rape but convicted of two counts of indecent assault involving two other women at Sheppard Air Force Base.
Col. Samuel Lofton III was the 82nd Training Group commander at the Wichita Falls base from 2004 until about a year ago. He was removed while being investigated for misusing his government travel card and pleaded guilty last week to larceny.
He had been accused of assaulting and raping a civilian worker, assaulting a second one and making sexually suggestive comments toward a third woman on the base.
The jury also convicted Lofton on Wednesday of two counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman. He was found not guilty of two other counts of indecent assault.
