House passes bill to name road after Emery

Renaming a Centre County highway stretch after a Bellefonte soldier is one step closer to reality.

Legislation designating state Route 26 in Spring and Marion townships as the Marine Sgt. David “DJ” Emery Highway passed the state House on Monday.

Senate Bill 999, introduced by state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, would affect the road between Interstate 80 and the Clinton County line. The Senate originally passed the bill on Oct. 1, 2007. Because the House amended the bill, it now returns to the Senate.

Don Houser, a spokesman for Corman, said he expects the Senate to vote on the bill soon before it adjourns for the summer.

A Bellefonte Area High School graduate, Emery, 22, enlisted in the Marines in 2003. On Feb. 7, 2007, while a private first class with 4th Battalion, 2nd Marines, he was seriously wounded on his second tour in Iraq. He was promoted on May 9, 2007.
