Pool company helps Yuma Marines cool it

Associated Press

YUMA, Ariz.— Yuma Marine Corps Air Station-based Marines serving in Afghanistan will be able to get some relief from the heat there this summer.
A Georgia-based pool company and a shipping company with Phoenix ties arranged to ship the Marines a 20-foot by 40-foot aboveground swimming pool recently.

The Harrier pilots and support personnel from the Marine Attack Squadron-513 and from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-13 are now working to put the pool together.

The whole effort began when a Marine corporal in Afghanistan who was asked to build a pool e-mailed Direct Swimming Pool Products President Jim McCuller for help.

McCuller said he mulled it over a couple of days and decided to give the Marines a pool.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Julie Hendricks, the traffic management officer at Yuma, then contacted DHL Express to ask if the company would help ship the pool for free.

The company agreed to do it as a show of good will.

DHL representative Suzie Daniel said it made sense.

“We’ve been doing quite a bit of business for them over the last seven or eight months in moving their gear to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom and then also a lot of material into Iraq,” Daniel said.
